I have always wanted to buy land and work the land I own. Now I have purchased a small piece of property, 21 acres. I am doing a lot of research on tractor sizes, PTO, HP, Makes etc. I hope to learn much on this site and share my experiences with the Group as I move forward with this new venture. Any and all suggestions would be helpful. Thank you all.

Hello Vince and welcome. It would be interesting to find out what type crop or animals you are thinking about for your 21 acres? That would help narrow down what tools you will need. Ken Sweet

I will own a couple of horses and cows along with some chickens. I am looking at planting tomatoes, Strawberries and Blackberries. The acreage is slightly slopping at the front end of the property. I also have a long driveway to maintain along with maintaining the weed growth on the property.

Welcome Vince. There are a bunch of us "Farmer at 54" types on the forum. It is a great place to gather information. The search function is a great place to spend some time as you narrow down your needs. It also helps to know what part of the world you are in.

Here are the tools needed to put up you hay for the livestock and maintain the strawberries and garden and yard area. A good used sickle mower to cut your hay. A New 3 point 4 wheel hay rake to put you hay into a windrow and then have a neighbor come in and custom bale it for you. Then A New roto tiller to prepare a seedbed for the Garden and Strawberries and a Good used veggie transplanter to put in the garden/strawberries. The lastly the box blade for driveway maintainence and the finsih mower to maintain the yard. Ken Sweet

I bought 33 acers several years ago and decided that I couldn't afford to buy and maintain an old 4 row crop set-up. Becides, I was already working 56 hours a week at my day job. I decided to watch my neighbor farm it with his 12 row set-up.

It's much easier this way and it pays better.

Those 6 implements I listed above would cost $6240 + modest shipping. A good square hay baler that we have in stock would run $1500 to $3500 and then you can add a used tractor to that. Maybe 35 hp minimum?($3500 to $5500) Ken Sweet

Kind of reminds me of a the joke..."What would I do if I won a million dollars...I'd farm until it ran out.!" Welcome Vince and good luck in your chosen career. I wish I had tried it a few years ago.
