My on going 8.1L saga

Fortunately for me, this is not costing me anything substantial. My machinist has known from the first few thousand miles I put on this engine that something wasn't right. The way we both remember it, I had put about 15,000 miles on it when the cat came apart, so the oil consumption was happening before that. It burned 4 quarts of oil in the first 3000 miles. Maybe it was detonating and I couldn't hear it. But either way he has taken responsibility and is making good on it. My job is to make sure it doesn't happen again. As far as a crate motor they are $9000 and a junk yard motor is a rare find, not to mention when we were looking for a rebuildable core we got 3 motors that all needed significantly more work than rebuilding mine.

In these parts, used 8100's change hands for aywhere from 1k to around 3k depending on mileage, condition, and how complete they are. I have heard it mentioned before that good powertrain cores are harder to come by and more expensive on the west coast. http://trucknight.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=forsale&action=display&thread=652 Unfortunately from last year, but they do pop up from time to time in the good old rust belt.

Or a low mile engine from a junk yard?

 The idea is good but finding one where I am, the only ones are in U-hauls. Chevy sold a total of 2 3500s within 40 miles of me. And the other guy's has more miles and he isn't selling. :D Most people that have them won't sell them unless they have problems like brain55 has.

I can honestly say I have never seen one. I see tons of 6.0 gas motors and the Dmax but I can not say I have ever seen one. Most of my friends and clients drive Fords and a few Dodges but the few that have GM stuff have 1/2 tons and 2 I know with 6.0's and 2 with Dmax engines in the HD stuff.

We see lots of them in boats and just like in the trucks they use oil. We run strait 40 weight oil. Some run 25W40 and I know a few that run Rotella 15W40. Its not that big of a deal in them because the average one sees about 75 hours a year which is equal to a about 3,000 miles per year. They make good power. The standard 8.1 is 370 HP and the HO version they call a 496 MAG HO puts out 425 HP.
