Farm Gate

Harv do you have a picture of the lock set up?

I need to set some thing up at my cabin I'm tiered of chains that get cut.

For one gate we have the pipe and T piece type with the lock in the pipe catching the T piece, but with a farm gate I couldn't get that arraignment to work.

Tom, here's a pic of the one we have. The gate is a standard farm and ranch store tube gate and I fabricated the lock using an idea Harvey had and posted a few years back.
This one still allows the lock to be cut and will only keep out the lazy and sorry type of thief. Now for your average "hard working" thief it won't stop them. But lets face it if they want in bad enough....

Today while doing other stuff I came up with an idea that I think will drive thiefs crazy.

Look at this lock. I know you've seen them. Master Lock Co. Magnum Security Lock and Guarded Hasp - M736XKADCCSEN at The Home Depot

The way they work is the dead bolt is inside the lock itself.

Look at the horseshoe latch. Now imagine instead of horse shoe a round housing to hold the lock. A round housing with an opening for the keyhole in the round lock.

Now look at the shaft on the horseshoe latch. Instead of a horseshoe let us imagine a tab with a hole in it coming off of the shaft. That hole accepts the deadbold inside the round lock.

So what you have is a captured shaft that goes across the gate into a receiver on the post. On the gate you have a flat plate holding the round housing that holds the round lock. When you slide the bolt home the tab with the hole for the lock is captured by the lock.

You have no access to the deadbolt, the tab with the hole in it, or the round lock because of the housing.

This has to confuse a thief.

Harvey, I think I understand what you're saying and it sounds feasable. No real way to get at the lock with out tearing something up and making a lot of noise. I'm all for driving thieves crazy or some other far off place!:D

Oil field and industrial supply houses sell schedule 100 chain in various sizes. Bolt cutters do not work on schedule 100 chain - the supply houses use plasma to cut the chain (it is expensive though). Combined with a Mul-T-Lock security lock, that will keep out the bottom feeders, but not the pros. Then again, you are not going to keep the pros out anyway.

Small pleasure to come up to the gate and see the hacksaw and hammer marks all over the chain and lock, but no significant damage. On the other hand, sometimes Bubba will just drive through your gate.

I've always like the jobsite box style of recessed lock. It uses a regular lock that the loop part of it is bolted or welded into place and then when it's is locked the body prevents the bolt from being slid open. You can easily plate it with steel and the lock can face down to prevent water from getting into it.

Tom, I really think you could make that setup work for a farm type gate. You would need to make it, not like mine, where it would swing one direction like your drawing and you'd have to position your "lock box" pipe and the plate that your "tee" pin drops through to allow one of your horizontal tubes on the gate to nestle between. I've seen the kind you're wanting to make on oilfield lease road gates and government land gates.

if you look at a greenlee toolbox, they have a very simple and effective way of dealing with this problem.

Greenlee Products - Greenlee A Textron Company

it might be a bit hard to see on the pictures, but basically they tuck the lock tab into a pocket that won't allow boltcutters. it shouldn't be that difficult to come up with something similar for a gate... also, they keep the weather off the lock:thumbsup:
