Synthetic Engine Oil

The JD manual doesn't say anything about using synthetic oil in the engine.
I been using JD 15w-40 and would like to switch to Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic for easer start ups when it's cold out, plus I think synthetic oil is much better for an engine.
I use synthetic oil in just about everything I have that has an engine.
Tractor is a 4310 E Hydro, with just over 600 hours on the clock.

What do you guy's think?

I use the Rotella 5w-40 in my tractor. Made for much easier starting last winter. :thumbsup:

Yep, do it. I would not hesitate:thumbsup: for a second about that decision.

We have moved totally to Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic because we have found none better for all of our gas/diesel engines. One oil for everything is NICE.:thumbsup:

Tonight it is to be 9F and I hope I do not have to be starting anything but it is good to know any non starting issue will not be due to thick oil.

Using Mobil 1 in everything since the merger. Worked for Exxon in lube industry for 31 years. Knew Mobil 1 was the best from our research work on oils. After the merger, I could use Mobil 1 without feeling like a traitor. Gives you more hp and requires less fuel.

Forgot. using Castrol 5w30 put in by the dealer in our 2010 TDI until the warranty is off. Then I'll switch to Mobil 1 5w30 ESP that meets the VW spec.

Think that Rotella stuff is hydrotreated, not synthetic. Shell was big on hydrotreating.

along the same lines...how many hours on the tractor before switching over? I just bought a new JD last week and want to make sure everything is seated well before doing this. I just havent any idea when on a diesel

John most of our stuff is quite old and never saw synthetic anything before we owned it and so far no synthetic use issues. The diesels are 60 HP engines (JD- year 1983 and MF year 1976) and the two larger gas engines are in a 1989 F-700 truck (429) with 145K miles showing and 1992 Chevy 454 showing just over 100K miles that I changed to synthetic 10K miles ago.

Oil will get dark quickly the first time you use synthetic I noticed.

I would run the breakin oil the recommended time and then change over. I have never had a problem changing over at anytime whether the engine had 50hrs or 5000hr.

I switched from Dino oil to Delvac1 last month in the Kubota, I expect it will lead to a very good performing engine.Plus the rapid oiling on start-up, and easier cranking. I have used Mobil 1 for years in our engines.Jy
