I have 8 tractors here .. 1950 Austin Western Super 88-H the oldest .. the Jinma was my first New one .. 2007. It IS .. a freaking Mule .. can pull a 6' box-blade up 15% grade .. spilling over.

About six months ago .. I was just doing some really anemic grading here on Cahto Peak Road ... and she just ... stopped ... and died.

Now ... as much as I enjoy .. the Red Green episodes from CBC on PBS .. I Do endeavor to .. RTFM ... but ... what can I say. For you non-Army vets .. it means ... Read the Fine Manual .. hehehe.

There are TWO other little bitty filters .. that totally escaped my attention, untill my 354 stopped .. dead in the road. One, is attached to the line threaded into the fuel tank itself, .. and the other ... is actually, in the fuel supply valve body.

Now ... as I said above ... I do have 8 tractors here .. only the '52 8N runs on gas. My 3 Komatsu's (D21-p5, PC50UU-2, Wa30-2).. the Austin-Western grader.. the Kubota L-285 ... the Whacker roller .. have a very simple filter design regimen. One filter ... call it good.

Not soo ... with the 354. There is a screen filter, located up within the tank feed fitting, and another, located within the fuel "turn-off" valve, itself. Well ... gotta say .. I was feeling pretty embarrased ... being a tool-time kinda guy and all that. Being the East gate authority out my way, having the Jinma dead in the water, certainly peaked my interest, in ... fault analysis.

Soo ... if your Jinma dies .. for apparently No reason .. pull those two little bitty screen filters .. that somehow, I missed reading about, in the Fine Manual. Apparently .. their current penchant for "filtering" ... has really escalated since I was there in 1986. I watched the Nobel peace award live from BBC at 4am my time this am .. watch out for those filters .. brothers and sisters. Namaste`

Check with Ronald at Ranch Hand Supply. He has a aftermarket fuel bowl and fuel line kit that gives you a nice clear glass not plastic fuel bowl and a shut off that actually works. You get all new fuel lines and complete instructions to install for a fair price.

Attaboy, do not feel bad about missing that in tank-filter, it is not in the books. Whatever you do, do not reinstall that in-tank filter or you will be dealing with the same problem again.

I think it's "not in the book" because it's a US-spec thing. And that the manuals we get with these tractors are transliterations of their domestic manuals.

But I can tell that you've never been infested with diesel bugs yet. Once that happens - and you're caught without that little in-tank screen - you're looking at a potentially nasty mess in your fuel delivery system to clean up. If/when permitted to escape the tank, that crap can foul everything in its path on the way to - and sometimes even including - the fuel injectors. Keeping the screen in the tank can slow their movement down to the point where you should be able to see them in the sediment bowl - and drain/clean the tank - BEFORE it develops into the nasty part.

Another thing to note about the little (microscopic) buggers is that they carry water with them, and if allowed to, can do major damage to the barrels and plungers in your fuel injection pumps by displacing the fuel used as lubricant, causing corrosion, galling, and seizures. That info should be in your Army manuals too.:D
As Greg suggested, if bugs are the issue then you have to thoroughly drain and clean the tank and treat at least three subsequent fuelings with a biocide such as http://www.hammondscos.com/index.php?id=79

Greg, Bob, I agree about the bugs. That in-tank screen filter is 100-150 microns. I did away with the in-tank filter and installed a 15 micron filter in the line between the sediment bowl and injector pump. That filter is now serviceable whenever it needs to be.

On MY tractor I did away with the screen and that POS shut-off valve. I installed a standard 1/4" needle valve on the tank outlet. My tank was steamed cleaned upon assemble and I've kept clean fuel in it. I've still got the spin on fuel filter (keep a spare on hand). I'm not startin' a pissin' contest here on the amount of inline strainers needed, just sayin' what I did and that's been 7 yrs. ago and maybe 1200 hrs on it. The engine has started great in all kinds of cold weather without the use of glow plugs, I'm located in E. WA and it gets cold here. bjr.

Curious what you have for a spin-on fuel filter. I like that idea. Got a pic?

Pretty sure he's talking original equipment Bob, the one situated between the fuel pump and the injection pump. If I interpreted correctly, what he's done is removed the in-tank strainer/sediment bowl combo in favor of a simple shut-off valve. Sounds to me like the only pre-lift pump screen he's got now is that little one in the banjo fitting near the hand primer.
