Perhaps this is a silly question, but couldn't someone mount a button on the dash connected to a relay that turned the power on to the glow plugs? Then you could hold it in for a 5 count unless it is really cold, then hold for a 10 count? Avoid the whole timer thing.

Of course! But that would be "reasonable" instead of "dee-lux.";)

Sigjig, Austin is close to 200 miles south of me, but in Texas, that's "my neck of the woods." It's a bit of a drive from Austin, but Cooper's in Llano, TX is a great place for BBQ. I have a pilot friend who flys in there a couple of times a year to eat at Coopers.

I'l mention Cooper's to my Son. I'm not sure what's on our agenda while we're there other than helping him turn a large room into bedrooms for his Daughters. We've taken some 3 or 4 hours trips from Houston in the past, 2 hours on Texas highways isn't that bad. We ate at the Salt Lick in Round Rock in October, it was the best bar-b-que we've had so far. Thanks for the info, take care. Sig

In all fairness, let me say that I have never eaten at Coopers and my friend with the airplane looks for reasons to go fly. Coopers is an old BBQ place and serves their BBQ and fries wrapped up in butcher paper instead of on a plate. It sure saves on doin' dishes I suppose.:D Coopers is well enough known that your son may have heard of it. However, if you have a good place to eat in Round Rock, it's hard to pass up a known close-by place where you know you will be going home with a smile. Enjoy your trip. The weather should be superb.

I'm looking forward to some good weather, we just broke a snowfall record for the month of December, 42" in less than two weeks and the months not over.
Thanks again for the good advice. Sig

Jinman, I bought the glow plug timer today and installed it. Your still batting 1000 in my book. The glow plugs stay on for 6-7 seconds now no matter if it's the first start of the day or if the tractor is already warmed up. I think the timer was defective when I bought it two years ago, but didn't know the difference.
Thank again, Sig

I have already replaced my timer once. The next time it fails I will install a manual button and count to 10. There are extra holes in the dash for additional switches. All you have to do is get a momentary switch that fits this hole and it will almost look like a factory installation.

Andy-If the timer fails again, I may do exactly that. $65 + tax was a bit pricey. My directional relay is still bad because it's ~ $163. I'm not on the road that much either.
Thanks everyone for the help. Merry Christmas, Sig
