I picked up a 3038E back in October. Fenders & hood are plastic, but pretty stout - I'm not worried about them getting damaged.

So far I've been using it mostly with a 5' rotary cutter & doing a bit with a 5' box blade, plus getting a lot of use for the 300 FEL. Very happy so far. Plenty of power. Independant PTO lets the rotary cutter stay at fulll speed regardless of ground travel speed. The power steering lets you steer with one finger (if you wanted to) & the HST provides for a lot of efficiency when doing FEL work - or for constantly changing speed while cutting in unfamiliar or rough areas.

No frills, but it gets done what I need getting done.

If you notice the high end tractors have plastic hoods and fenders the low end still has sheetmetal which is cheaper. Sheetmetal on tractors is the most common area to age, rust and dent. The new plastic compounds are a far cry from yesterday's cheap plastics.

For the jobs you mentioned a package with the fel, brushmower, rearblade and a landplane grader should fix you up. Either tractor would work with these tools. I should mention that the landplane grader is great for smoothing bumps and mounds in the pastures, doesn't remove all the grass on level ground but will cut off the mounds, ant hills and so forth.

Steve....I have utmost respect for you and your experience and your posts, but, I would like to comment on metal versus plastic.....

My 1992 JD770 has metal fenders and hood. It's nearly 20 years old with 2600 hours. Not even a spot of rust. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being excellent, my paint is a 9. It has NO dents.

When I flip the hood up it must weigh 25+ pounds. I "feel" the quality.

Garage kept for 20 years.

JDgreengrass, i totally agree with you on the metal versus plastic. yes the plastic these days are a lot beter than days past, but it is still plastic. it doesnt take a whole lot to crsuh one or damage it. a metal hood or fender can take a lot more abuse and if it were to get dented, it is usually easier and cheaper to fix a dent than it is to bondo, sand, paint, etc a plastic piece, if it is even fixable.

As far Deere's 3032E or 30308E, yes they are decent tractors that will get the job done, but there are a few things that i think the "all mighty Deere company" skimped out on. For one, they have no engine temperature gauge. Really? personally, i would like to have a chance to at least now my engine is gettting to hot, they dont come with a tow bar, no foldable rops, no seat drain so they hold water, the fuel gauge is like that of a lawn mower, and the operators deck is open underneath you and that way all the heat, dust, noise, etc comes at you. it seems like they short changed this series, (comapred to other brands and their econmoy tractor)

Just a comment about plastic. Painted plastic does not stand up to fading very well. For what ever reason a plastic hood left in the sun will fad beyond repair where a painted metal hood will buff up like new with a little wax.
Just my observation having both styles.

I have a 3032E with 820 hours on it, and it doesn't have a dent on it either. Wore the paint off the pedals a bit. The MF tractor may be just fine, but it's a Mitsubishi tractor. Massey Ferguson is only a brand name - they're owned by Agco. The Deere is a Deere tractor, using a Yanmar engine, no questions about that. Mine has JD logos in castings, and made in USA on a some of the big parts. If you take super care of your tractor, you may want to make sure you can get parts in 10 or 15 years. It's not the only important thing.... but certainly worth thinking about

I just want everyone to know that my comments on metal is my experience.

I have had no experience with plastic and I have read here somewhere that Deere's plastic is quite bullet proof.

Having plastic must decrease the weight at least some.?? Deere tractors seem to be light in weight. Kinda bugs me.??

I was wondering today if trucks these days weigh more or less than they did back in the day.??

I have had metal for the vast majority of my tractors and have both metal (my 820 1974) and three with plastic ones today. All of mine have good body panels but in looking for good used tractors I have seen alot of rusty sheetmetal. I don't think that the body panels has much effect on the weight of a tractor either metal or plastic. I suspect the trucks today weigh more than those of yesterday, tremendous increase in gadgets, higher hp motors, bigger heavier duty transmissions, heavier and fancier seats it goes on and on. Incidently there is alot of plastic on modern class 8 trucks.

New Deere tractors are built lighter than the older models such as the Twenty series, my 820 is 31 pto hp yet weighs 4000 lbs (OS) where as the new 4520 is almost 3800 lbs with 66% more hp. To ballast the newer tractors you then have to add weights that add nothing to the physical structural strength of the tractor. This is similar to me to buying a lightweight boxblade and adding weights to it. Much better to buy a well built boxblade that has the heavier metal aiding in the structural strength.

More to the point I wouldn't shop for a tractor thinking that the body panels are going to have much effect on how durable the tractor will be. I do look at the body panels as those in poor condition may reflect the care the equipment has had.
