There must be something wrong with the system. BOTH new GM and Ford diesels have heating systems built in to the tank and injectors. Urea freezes at about 12F. They obviously designed the system for that since it gets plenty cold down here in the states too.Too bad the urea freezes in the 2011 duramaxes ... they forgot aboot how cold it gets in Canada ////////![]()
Here is a PDF file on GM's website explaining the DEF system and it's components.
Check out page 9: http://www.chevrolet.com/assets/pdf/owners/manuals/2011/SilveradoHD_DEF_6-23.pdf
Trade both of those trucks in for some Dodge diesels which still don't use DEF. Problem solved!Q. Will DEF freeze?
A. Yes, DEF will freeze at approximately 12F. If DEF is frozen, the vehicle will start as it always has. As soon as the vehicle is started, the DEF tank and lines are electrically heated to ensure adequate DEF delivery in cold weather. The DEF thaws with no degradation. Remember, since this system was designed to operate in cold weather, there is no impact on cold-weather engine operation."
