I have a probler with the rpm tach on my 7740 some times it works and some times it does not

sounds like your tach needs replacing.

Or the wiring between the alternator and tach. Next time the tach quits, see if the PTO works. If the PTO relay doesn't get a 'W' (AC) signal from the alternator, the PTO is inoperative. Same signal drives the tach.

The pto works cuz I was baling when the tach wasn't working
