When my 5.9 cummins goes. I'll be out of the diesel market. Not going to deal with all the smog crap
It's unfortunate but the failing EVAP purge solenoids and Ethanol related fuel problems aren't much better...
If you leave these new diesel trucks stock and follow the maintenance by the book then you have very little chance of problems. My buddy's 2009 RAM 3500 is still running strong at 150k miles and stock. He drives all over the east coast picking up cars (3 at a time) from auctions to sell at his dealership. I also have family and friends with newer GM diesel's with over 150k too! Keep them stock, run them regularly (not sitting for weeks or more) and run the correct oil plus a good fuel additive (like Power Service) and you wont any problems with the new emissions add-ons. I cannot say anything about the UREA stuff on the Ford/GM's as I don't know anyone with one. Give them a few years though to judge reliability, they already are having hard times in cold climates...

A buddy of mine has an 08 cummins with 6.7. Dealer told him that the computer is programed to turn on around 60 K for EGR maintance / cleaning. Forget what he said the cleaning cost.I'm sure it wasn't cheap. At some point he will have to have carbon cleaned from the Turbo It also won't be cheap when he has to have the DPF cleaned.

Alot more maintance / Sensors than the O'5.9

The engine makers that pursued egr in diesels to address the NOx emissions are the ones with the least happy customers as far as I can tell. The diesel fluid guys are making out quite well without the huge mpg hits the egr guys are taking. The fluid is quite cheap already and a tank lasts quite well.

A lot of the mess of stuff on diesels today is to make the hp at the same time as meeting emissions. At high hp per litre it gets hard to meet all the different emissions targets.

What are you basing this on? UREA in a diesel pickup is still WAY too new to judge reliability. I doubt anyone has more than 100k miles on a UREA based truck. Just wait until people find out how much it cost to replace the exhaust, UREA injectors or the tank heaters when they fail.

Been sold to the US market since at least 2006, I first read about test vehicles running it back in the 90's. Its not really fancy stuff.

I'd rather have some exhaust work to do any day than clean egr valves and passages.

Oh, who cares about that stuff? It's warranty work anyways. :)
By that time we'll be all electric........ or on horses.

You would think it would be warranty. They want to claim dirty fuel instead of bad injectors. They say EGR cleaning is normal maintance ( like changing oil) therefore, not covered under warranty

Urea runs for a couple of years in Europe now. EGR doesnt make you happy either, heat exchangers leak, control valves clog up from long idle runs...

Diesel exhaust! Not to mention these misguided persons cutting off all the exhaust controllers and trying to get better mileage. Behind them is like following a 30 year old bus in mexico. jy.

The first commercial urea application launched in 2003 on the mercedes actros truck (medium duty). So that = 7 years in active production and every year more vehicles have been added, many where european customers voluntarily choose to take the reduced emissions at a higher first cost, but with reduced vehicle registration cost for the first X years (3-5 years). The warranty on the commercial vehicles is typically 1 million miles on the emissions equipment or engine rebuild.

The UREA(has a freeze point of 12f and a problem over 85ishf?) has not been on the commercial market until now. testing? Yes limited use. generally speaking, the UREA plus the DPF is standard on all diesel motors(2011 yr). DPF's have been out in the market since 2007. EGR's earlier. Low sulfer diesel since, what 2005? ULSD...since 2007? lower sulfer= lower BTU's,= lower fuel mileage.

Been an owner operator for 20 yrs. I am very picky about keeping my costs down. These gov emissions are costing me more money in direct costs for the equipment. Plus making me burn more fossil fuel. I agree that we need to keep the Nox down, but common sense has gone out the window.

i own a 2005 international truck. Cost in 2005? $105,000
the exact same spec's truck, 2011 model? $145,000

but hey,what do i know?
