Can anyone tell me if the 1982 Ford 1700 has a hydraulic filter or screen? I'm not finding one in the manual and can't find one on the tractor.

Thanks

There is no spin-on filter, but you do have a filter screen (item 15) as shown in the illustration below.

piper,

follow the suction line (bigger dia) to the rear diffy on the side, remove the big banjo fitting to be able to retrieve the screen housing. There is a paper gasket that you might need to replace. Oil needs to be completely removed. you can clean and reuse the filter if not rusted. it is of good stainless steel quality. I used tooth brush and diesel to clean it out.

Well I'm batting 100%. I took the cover off to clean the screen and there wasn't anything there!!! You could see a small piece of the screen on the fitting but it was gone. Someone must have removed it before I bought the tractor.
Any ideas?

Piper,

I bet ya that the screen is still there. When you take the banjo bolt off then the intake pipe comes off. The screen is attached to the round hub. You"ll need to remove 4 bolts on the filter base hub to withdraw the whole thing. Take a look at the picture below. did you take the 4 bolts off? I took the whole pipe off from the pump to the inlet. there is some play in the to free up the filter out of it's hole.

JC,

another pic of the filter, do notice the hub on the filter on the right side.you'll need to take 4 bolts that attaches the hub to the diffy housing.

JC, I took the 4 bolts off because I already had the suction line disconnected. I'm going to see if I can see inside the case to see if it's in there but my first attempt I didn't see anything in the bottom.

I hope its there. If not I would be worried about the hyd. pump. I don't know where it comes from but every year when I change my fluid I remove the filter and it always has a lot of debris in it. I think Napa can get you a new filter if needed.

Piper, when you took the 4 bolts off, then did you pry the hub off. The filter media is part of the hub. It would be quite crazy for the previous owner to remove the filter/hub, and cut off the filter media and put all back together. I can't see all of that media corroded in place and not have a major hiccup for the hyd pump. I an event he actually took off the filter media then I would for sure make sure to put a new screen/hub in there before you recommission your 1700.

did you pull the hub off of the diffy?

I did pull the hub off the diffy and when I removed the 4 bolts the hub fell into the bucket of oil.
I'm going to get a boroscope today and look around in the bottom of the case but from what I can see right now with a flashlight there is no screen laying in the bottom.
The oil was real milky which tells me that there was water in the hydraulic fluid. The bucket wasn't working very well when I tore the engine apart and started this project.
When I say it wasn't working very well I mean that when I would fill the bucket with dirt the bucket wouldn't raise until I would start backing up. Then while I was moving it would do great. Not sure if the water in the oil was causing this to happen or not.
After I get finished with this project it will probably sit inside and won't get water in the case like it did before unless it was from condensation but should be better if it's inside.
I'm taking tons of pictures and should have a pretty good library of pics when I'm done.
I've attached a few pictures of the painting and body work progress. Pretty much finished with that and can't wait till it's outside running again.
I had a pretty bad score in one of the cylinders and had a machine shop bore and line that cylinder. The rest looked really good but not sure how the scoring occured and I'm assuming that it was a long time ago, before I bought the tractor.
I also put a picture of the transmission case with the hub off. You can see where the filter was in place at some time.

You know, the more I read about your tractor, the more I think the previous owner must have gotten tired of that filter screen clogging and just cut it out. I've seen plenty of people who thought that way.:confused2:
