Broke Ground For New Garden With Middlebuster!

I've had great success using a middle buster and "plowing the middles", both here in Michigan and in Troup, TX last month.

Yes, it can be sometimes difficult to keep the plow precisely where you want it and keep your tires positioned accordingly.

What has worked for me is this, as always, YMMV, but I rake or disk it inbetween each plowing. The purpose is more for the tire control than anything else. Also, sink that plow deep, as deep as it'll go on the second time. It'll hold it's track better if you're deep. I haven't done that cross trick, but....

I about spit my coffee out in laughing when Western said, "Leave your beverage at the end of each row or you will be wearing it too."

Dang, now that's funny.

jinman, you know you cannot get those really neat rows with a MB.:D
The trick is to cover your sins by disking VERY nicely and no one knows.:laughing:

My theory is this. Don't let the process of getting better implements cause you not to put a garden in, even if you don't plant large ones that jinman and I do. I spend a lot of my time encouraging gardening and teaching young gardeners.

A lot of guys here on TBN show off their $2600 roto tillers and I think it intimidates a lot of folks. Yes, they are great, but for the $140 cost of a MB and a $260 field cultivator, or a section of spring tooth and folks can put in a garden.

Later, as funds permit and through careful watching of Craigs or farm sales, better implements can be added.

I could have said, "Those ARE straight rows in East Texas."

But I'd never say such a thing.:D

Well, just as long as you don't accuse me of being an East-Texican, I'd probably agree. Wise Co. is a lot of things, but it ain't East Texas.:D

BTW: I agree that a middle buster is surely a way to break up unplowed soil if you don't have a turning plow. I used my sub-soiler to break up an area where I was excavating for a building pad. By crosshatching with the sub-soiler, I was able to come back and excavate with the FEL very easily. There are lots of uses for those types of tools. I also have used my middle buster to dig some very effective water runoff control ditches. The uses are only limited by your imagination.

Well sadly to say, the garden is shut down for a little while. I was able to get HALF of the plot plowed going 90 degrees.....then the rains came. I couldn't go the same direction I went the first time because the tractor wouldn't stay where I needed it to. It would just slide. So the last couple of days, we (my tractor and I) have been helping my brother with his little "project".

Here's the link if ya'll wanna see the video....

I now have one of those overpriced rototillers and man it's nice. I almost hate to walk in that nice, soft powdery dirt!.

I still think breaking in the garden for the first time and every few years with a deep plow is the way to go though.

What ever you do as far as a garden though, still puts you ahead of allot of Americans, it's great therapy.

I also only fertilize at planting and during growth, don't want to fight well fed weeds later on..:D

As far as crooked rows. I prefer "straight" ones but hey I don't plan on getting into "homes and Gardens" so I don't sweat it to much, if it's that bad then say it's to confuse the deer!!:D

Likewise, I have gone to the rototiller after the Middlebuster.Over-priced? Hardly, now my back feels so much better. I have the TSc that is adjusted sideways to wipe out the tire tracks. I cannot believe how finely pulverized the soil is after 2 passes.I am adding leaves and yard clippings now to the deep furrows to make it better next year. Sorry, now that I did not buy the composter barrel too. Jy.
