I'd also go with some type of degreaser, commercial or just a good soap, let sit then rinse. The warmer the water the more it will help

Simple Green is amazing stuff. Spritz, sit, rinse, repeat if needed.

I envy your floor drain. I wanted to put one in my out building that just ran to daylight, and the contractor that put the floor in wouldn't do it. Said it was against some regulation, but couldn't tell me what or under who's authority. I didn't have time to argue with him, but sure wish now that I had. I sure don't see the difference in environmental impact between a floor drain that runs to daylight and doing the degreasing type work on your driveway. :confused2:

We use purple power for this task. Get it at the auto parts store for under $10 per gallon and put it in a old spray bottle. For this task I use full strength. I use a ELECTRIC pressure washer also for this task. It has about 1500 psi, about half of what a gas one does. Great for these tasks and washing cars.

The flor drain is illegal but it was installed before I bought the place. It's great for melting snow as well

I have used Gunk engine degreaser in the spray can. It soaks thru most grime, but works even better if the motor is warm. Another commercial product is LPS, it works well too, but is very strong, when concentrated. Jy.

What brand of electric pressure washer do you have Chris? I have though about getting one for cleaning stuff. I had a gas pressure washer for a house staining project and decided the engine maintenance wasn't worth it to keep it around, plus don't need all that pressure anyways.

Ditto on the advice to go easy around electrical. Just spraying a hose, if I direct too much against the cowling behind the engine, even my simple electrical system gets befuddled for a bit.

If you have access to an air compressor (it doesn't have to be anything big) you can use one of these. You can adjust the pressure so you don't blow the paint off the engine and it can get into small places. It let you control how much spray you want to use. There are several types of cleaning solution you can get at any parts store. Just stick the small hose into the cleaning solution and hook up the air line. Keeps the mess down considerably.

Yes, I made a mistake and put Electric, not Gas. I went back and fixed it.

I am on my 3rd power washer. My first was a Campbell Hausfeld. I screwed up and left it in the pole barn where it froze up and cracked the pump. The next one was a Kracher. My daughter cut the hose and it was going to cost $30 for a new one. The current one is a no name one from Menards. Had it for a year and it works great for $40 on sale. I got lucky and the hose from the old CH one had the same threads so I got a $5 adapter and hooked them together for a 50' hose now. Real nice. I use it weekly to wash the tractor, boat, cars, ect.

I also use an el cheapo electric pressure washer that I got from Home Despot for around $50.00. I use this one for washing stuff that might get damaged by my gas powered 3000 psi one, such as radiators, small engines, barn cats etc. Well, not cats really. For what I paid, I didn't expect it to last as long as it has. I think I use it more than the gas one. The pump shuts itself off when the wand's trigger is released, which is nice. For degreasing, I mix Gunk 50/50 with kerosene and put it in a spray bottle. Although it isn't recommended with these cheap pressure washers, I often run hot water through them.

Thanks Chris and Heywood. Sounds like just buy one that looks like it will not self destruct. I only need to use a washer 1 or 2 times per year. Not the best thing for a gas engine besides the having to drain the fuel and all.
Dave.
