Slant roof pole shed

I built a leanto on the side of my barn. It's 16 x 35. I used 2x12s, 18' long spaced 16" apart, Hangers on a lagged down header board at the barn and 2 -2x12s bolted together onto posts every 6' at the free end. I used 2x4 purlins and 26 gauge steel. My pitch is very flat, 1.25:16. Last winter it had 58" of snow on it. Held up just fine; no signs of any damage.

That sounds like a well built leanto shed. Good quality 2X12's on 16" centers - that's serious lumber.

I need something to park the tractor and trailer under. I figure something 20' x20' or close. Maybe enclose the sides later.

I have access to telephone poles, but not trusses. I have looked around for pole shed designs using no truss and just a slant tin roof, and can not seem to find any. Is this because it should not be done, or is my google-fu' weak?

I need some experience here. I have never build a pole shed, so any info on the slant roof...other options I could do myself, and specific dimensions to save lumber etc are appreciated.

Spek, A lot of good info on sheds posted here. I built a 16x20 pole shed like one posted here with the pictures, the red one. I scrounged the materials at auctions and only had $50 in it. If you wanted a truss type building, check with a place where they make them. There is one around here that always has some left over or wrong sized that they sell real cheap.
But since you are in Alabama, you probably really don't need all that much support for snow. But be sure to build it strong enough, in case!

If I need it over 16 feet deep, say 20 feet. Since the sheet metal roof would run front to rear with the slope and that would be a 20' span. Would you overlap 10' sheets of sheet metal or does it come in 20' pieces?

Please understand I am a novice at carpentry. I know this is probably the easiest thing to built for a shed , but it is still a little confusing.

Where are you located? You can buy the tin in any length you want. The last I bought was 24' long. If your going with tin that long I would recommend staying with 26 ga. A lot of people will tell you 29 ga is o.k. for a roof, but I weigh about 270# and it's easy for me to dent 29 ga. walking on it on a roof.

I bought this book years ago and found it VERY helpful, http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Pole-Building-Construction-Outbuildings/dp/0913589160.

The book shows how to do simple load calculations for both beams and posts. It also has some load tables for various beam and posts sizes. The book also talks about various pole building techniques and building details. It also has some plans which are interesting to study. The book is 25 years old so newer materials will not be covered but the basics are in there. I really like the book for the structural load information which is why I keep pulling the book of the shelf.

You can drill thru and use carriage bolts and nuts/washers, or you can drill a smaller pilot hole and use lag bolts. For a 10' span with no chance of snow load, 2x6's are fine, use one front and one back, at both front and rear of your building. Make sense?

Like firefighter says, you can get it cut an any length you like, but the longer they are they harder they get to handle to put them up. If you have a couple helpers, yes get them cut the full length. Be sure to make it long enough that it overhangs about 1" to shed off the water. A couple advantages of using two 11' long sheets is they are easier to handle, and if you need to adjust for length you can just slide one a little to get it right where you want it. Much easier than ordering a 22' long piece and trimming.

Just one other point is that the big box home improvenment stores usually carry standard lengths in 6, 8 and 12 ft.

In my area, I found that Lowe's had a better selection. Your millege may vary.

Another source of metal roofing might be your local farm supply store. One of our local farm supply store sells metal roofing. They had a variety of colors and would cut to length.

I never asked if I had to pick the roof panels up at the store or if the delivered at the work site. I wondered if they just brought in the trailer and cut to length on site. I know there is a contractor that has a trailer that has a roll of metal as well as the machines to form and cut the metal. I do not know if he is making gutters and or roof material. Seems like you could do both.
