Hello, I am new on this forum, my questions might be already answered. I have a JD 4300, sync reverse, which has a leak coming from the hydraulic pump. Well, the unit on the right side of the engine under the electric starter looks like a pump to me. I checked the hoses, everything seems fine; the wet area is starting between the pump and the engine. Apparently, the leak happens when I use the tractor, or when I leave the FEL raised several inches. If I leave the FEL slightly raised, it would go down overnight; that is probably normal. Otherwise the tractor works fine. The leak is small, a teaspoon or two after each use. Before I go to the service, I have a couple of questions: The tractor was serviced recently, just before I bought it. Could it be a normal overflow due to too much oil? Is there anything I could do myself before I spend big money on the service. I am used to a wrench but rebuilding a pump is probably too much for me. It seems quite hard to remove the unit. Any advice?
Thanks , Corneliu

Welcome again;)

First, you need to be SURE where the leak is comming from-clean the area well with a degreaser so you will be able to see clearly. There is a large molded hose on the suction side of the pump (#2 in the diagram) the could be leaking if your lucky.

The loader leakdown is normal-no problem there unless it happens very fast.

Do yourself a favor, and register at www.jdparts.com and learn how to use it-it's the same basic system the parts counter uses at the dealer and it's free. There is a quick tutorial linked in my signature also if you need help with it. Also, the service manual on CD is only about $75 or so and is great to have if you plan on doing your own service.

Agree with kennyd to be find the source of the leak.
I've a 4300 as well, and there is a pesky small leak on the "left" side. I keep a small rag wrapped around the oil lines to catch any leaking oil.
I was thinking (from a previous post having to do with engine valve cover leakage) that it might also be where my oil leak was coming from as well).

Troubles are always around the corner. I just bought a brand new 2720 that came with hydraulic leaks on day one. These were all related to work done by the dealer's sloppy technician. Like forgetting to put the O rings in the hoses for the diverter valve, placing cotter pins in places and not bending them. leaving hoses with out tying them back so they chafed on the back wheels. All of which I got on the dealer for. Here comes the clincher!!! Last week I was spreading some top soil when I smelled hydraulic oil, I didnt think anything of it at the moment, but then I saw some oil on the road and stopped the machine to check. By then I had pumped almost half of my hydraulic oil on the road. It seems they have faulty tubing in the high pressure line which seemed to have split in a weld . Lookimg at the PIC from the other poster its the longer of the two lines shown in that pic.
Clean your leak and dry it then get some one to help by working the FEL a bit and look at that line. This could be your problem. Remember to stand back from that high pressure line for safty.

Hope this helps

PS. the dealer ordered the new line for me , and they said they had three in stock. He called JD today to find out where my part was, and they now have none left!!! and mine was not shipped...This tells me they have problems with these high pressure lines splitting.
