I hate to say it but I think you're right. A used second-tier tractor Mahindra, Kyoti, etc on Cragslist will cost about the same and have more features like power steering, rear remotes etc. It may have under 200 hours. I would still budget the same reserve for unexpected repairs however.
As I see it, a less expensive used Yanmar is a great bargain because they're indestructible. However paying an additional $4000 for pride-of-ownership pretty and the right to call it 'reconditioned' is not the best use of my money. I would buy a shiny Yanmar-manufactured Deere if I put more importance on impressing my neighbors - but it's not a consideration. Maybe if I ran a Dressage stable or something.
I'm reminded of a comment from Rick Steve, PBS travel correspondent and tour guide. People ask him how his tour customers can afford international travel on middle-class salaries. He said there is one major factor - his customers drive their cars ten years instead of trading in every three years like the manufacturers want you to do. The difference is what makes funds available for travel. Different people make different choices; this is how they prefer to spend their money.
