Finished blowing snow and parked my 2500-hour L4200 on Sat - when I shut down the machine, just as the engine came to a stop, I heard a 'klunk' that I never heard before. Uh-oh... I turned the key, and nothing. I changed the starter 4-5 hours ago - first thought was that it malfunctioned. Alternator? I quickly checked the battery - a perfect 12.6V... panic starts to set in...wait a minute... PTO is still engaged. Disengaged the lever and "bvROOM-clattaclattaclatta..."

Holy crud... I actually have a safety switch that still works. Didn't think I did.

I did that with my lawnmower once, oh well good to know its all working well. So did you return the starter?

I engage the PTO when I park the tractor outside, it makes a fairly good anti-theft device. Even some Kubota owners can't get the thing started.

On my Mitsu they had a neutral start enable switch that was by passes by simly connecting the male and female together.
My simple anti theft deterant is to manually disconnect that pair and prop them under the seat where thy dont show.

No - the starter crapped out 4-5 hours *of operation* ago. It would only grind horribly - like when you turn the key when it's already running. Kubota starter is $495 from the dealer. I found a generic at a local starter/alternator shop for $200. I could've had mine rebuilt for $120, but I wanted a shiny one. I've since found the same starter on line for as little as $89. Anyway, turns out there is a clutch in there that was cooked. Rotten thing only lasted a little over 2500 hours :). I swapped it out and the tractor is good as new...provided I disconnect the PTO, or course.

I discovered the same thing when my GST lever safety micro-switch malfunctioned. I think it is quite nice of the manufacturers to mount the switched wires one with a male and the other with a female connector. Obviously they are designed for an effortless bypass.

Ahem. I suppose it would've been safe from me, at least...but not anymore!!

On my tractor, the intellipanel explains exactly what you need to do to get it started... depress clutch....PTO disengaged...etc...helpful when you forget:D

I hate my seat safety interlock, I think it's more like deadly than safety. It keeps cuting my engine out, what a piece of shiiiiiiiiiit.
