Go out in the storm or wait till its over

I wait until it's all over if I have the option to do so. The snow blower does an equally good job regardless of the snow depth. As long as it's less then 2ft snow I don't clear it during storms unless I have to get to work. They are forecasting around 10-14" for us. Not too bad.

We are in the middle of a blizzard. With about 8" on the ground and 40mph winds I went out and started plowing. I wanted to get every thing opened up in case we get the 20-30" they are calling for. We have never had a snow storm this size. I wasn't sure if I could move 20" of snow with my front blade. I figured I would do it in stages. Go out about every 4 hrs. Do you go out in the storm or wait till it is over. BTW it is an open platform tractor. No cab.

Never wait until it's over. That's a rookie mistake, and is why the southern/mid states get crippled when a minor storm like this rolls through. 2' of snow is nothing, BUT you can't plow 2' of snow. Plowing 6" of snow 4 times is easy. Plow early, and plow often.

If you had a blower, then I'd tell you to start a fire, drink some whiskey, and enjoy the pretty views until it's over. Blowers don't care how deep it is.

Neither do loader buckets, if you don't mind taking the time...

I think if you have the time, stay in front of it.

Practice makes perfect :D

I like to wait until the snow and wind stops because it's just no fun to be miserable.

This is what I do as well.

If it's over say 18" I will knock out a hole wide enough for the vehicles.

I clear the storm a day or 2 after the storm has passed....winds have died out and often, by then, the sun is shining brightly. Perfect weather to enjoy some seat time.

If the snow depth is not higher than than my plow blade height I don't worry about plowing early. I think my blade height is 23 inches.

If your doing this as a job you cant wait tell its over with over 1' and drifting. Its to much snow for even the largest equipment. With the larger snow amounts you'll also have problem with cars buried under snow drift you'll never see.

Fisher snowplows used to have a warning sticker on their plows that read
" Always Plow With The Storm" Meaning not to let the snow get so deep the machine pushing it can't handle it. Like others have said I rather do a storm 3- 4 times Usually a open up, clean up, touch up and save my equipment.

If you need to be out in an open tractor during a storm, a snowmobile suit and a full faced helmet will keep you toasty.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion. To me, a rookie mistake is wasting time and fuel plowing snow when you KNOW you'll have to do it again. If I know it's going to pile up deeper than I can handle, then yes, I'll knock the heavy stuff down every once in a while so I'm not buried in. Other than that, I sit inside and wait.
As far as doing it for a job, I would agree you need to keep ahead of it. But I don't think that was the topic.

I usually do mine around the foot mark, keeps it easy to find places to put it.
