With cattle, dairy, and large acreage dirt farming (cotton, soy beans, etc.) you can figure about what a farm can make per acre because there aren't as many variables as, say, a tomato crop. Where I live (the mtns of WNC) the farms are very diverse and it's not that big of a deal.

I never new it was rude to ask a farmer how many cows he milked until last summer. I was doing some carpenter work for a dairy farmer and I asked him three times how many cows he was milking and each time he replied " a barn full". I didn't get until now. Now I understand. He wouldn't think about asking me how much money I had in my savings account.

I was at a auction with a buddy once, my buddy was talking to a farmer, they seemed to be getting on pretty well. Maybe 1/2 hour of conversation and coffee. Then my friend asked how many acres he farmed. Mr. Farmer turned and walked away, without saying another word. My friend was surprised, looked at me like "wtf?" I explained that that was considered pretty rude. BTW, the ewg database is really hated by these folks.

Now I don't know all that much about dairy and row crop farming, but there are enormous variables in beef cattle.
I’m still on the family farm, 135 acres. Growing up, we raised a small herd of polled herefords, 20 cow/calf pairs at most. Long story short, dad died, grandpa and I decided to sell all cattle and most equipment. Shortly after we both regretted it, but we made the decision at a bad time. Now grandpa’s gone and I’ve decided to slowly get back into a raising a few cattle. Only have 4 at the moment. Just enough to regularly say “those stupid $~#^*% cows”. :D But, not enough to make too much work. We lease out about 30 acres for crops, neighbor puts up about 20 acres in hay, and the rest I take care of for the deer.

Around here it's considerd very Rude to ask a man how many Acres he has or how many Cows he runs...

Same as askin how much Money ya got in the Bank...

Well I was the one that ask the question and I surely intended no offense to anyone. I don't recall that being a thing where I was raised. My intentions were to give a better perspective of what it took to be a full time farmer. Many join the forum with the dream and no understanding of the reality.

Sorry if I stepped on any toes.

Dunno who's toes got stepped on.... More of a 'Teaching Moment' so Folks with the 'Dream' might be a little less likely to piss off someone who otherwise might have been willing to help out...;)

My dad has the farm; I came on this site looking for some wisdom/knowledge about one if his tractors. But grew up there, so about 300 acres with Polled Herefords, and we did custom hay work. He still has about 50-55 head of mother cows and does his own hay. Doesn't do computer stuff. I work for the local electric cooperative, so I am tied to the rural life still. He has two John Deere tractors and all the toys. I have chainsaws.

My family used to have a good size orange farm. I do not farm for a living but have made some money with horses. I enjoy pasture maintenance and cruising my timber. We have 50 acres of which 18 is open and 12 in pasture. We have a 2005 5103 JD, a 1968 4020 JD and a 1952 8N. I am working on acquiring a 5020 JD to expand my pasture maintenance to my neighbors large cattle operation. He has offered me a solid wage to pull a 28ft set of discs and a 16 ft cutter when needed. I do not need the money but will definitely take the seat time.
