Easy hydraulic question

The Teflon in the tape and the sealer aren't really sealers at all. They're lubricants. The Teflon lets the threads slide against each other more easily, so you can tighten them tighter and thus acheive an even greater interference in the threads.

My question is how many times can they be reassembled and still have a mechanical seal?

JB

That's a good question. I've been told by some people that NPTF is really designed for one time use. In the product training I received several years ago, the instructor said this. "NPTF is only NPTF the first time you assemble it. After that, the threads are deformed, and you should treat the fitting as NPT."

In practice, I take that to mean you'd better have some thread sealant (more accurately, thread lubricant) handy if you're going to take a connection apart and reassemble it again.

Ken, The Hydraulic Hose Guy,

Does your company sell a hyd test kit that includes manifolds. Either a three gage set up or one gage with valve to select three circuit.

I have three hyd pumps on my Power-Trac, and would like to monitor all of them. I keep a QD gage in one circuit now.

I appreciate the help, folks. I put it all together tonight. No leaks and the couplers worked fine, so they must be the right one's.

I did try to flush the system as best I could. I wasn't able to do so until it was clean, but I did get some more water and milky fluid out. Finally, I hooked it up and ran it. I do notice now that the sight glass for the hydraulic fluid has some bubbles on top, which I would assume would be from the remaining water. I'm guessing that's ok as it would only be a very small amount in comparison to the massive amount of hydraulic fluid in the tractor. Am I right? It was just hard to let any contaminated fluid get in my system. It was so clean.:) I hadn't used the hydraulics since new so the fluid in the sight glass looked fresh as a daisy.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I learned more than I thought I would.

Could someone respond to the question in bold above? Thanks.

Sorry, JJ. We don't have anything like that. Gauges and QDs, but no test kits.

Another question for Ken The hydraulic hose guy.
Like every one else I try to keep cost down on a project. Really hard when it is hydraulics. I started making my own hoses, using all your stuff, reusable ends.
I tried to standardize, kind of , sizes. I started with 3/8 R2 hose and realized I really did not need R2. R1 is ok with 2250 psi which is what my tractor relief is set at. Then I realized that 7gpm , which is what my pump puts out is way too much for accessory 2" cylinders , which is mostly what I fool with. Angle on real blade, snowblower rotation and chute, grapple , etc.
So I have a couple more projects, side shift forks and maybe a 3 point dump box and I am looking at R1 1/4 inch. It is still pretty fast though at 3 gpm
Anyway I was looking at hose ends and I see 1/4 R1 1/4 SAE ends are $14.47
and 1/4 R2 1/4 SAE are $7.89. Pretty big difference when I have to get 12 ends or more. Would like to stay with R1 , more flexible , but this will drive me to R2
How Come such a big difference?

Because SAE 100R2AT hose is so popular, we are able to purchase some of the R2 reusable fittings in large quantities direct from the manufacturer. When we do that, we can afford to sell them at much lower prices than similar items which we must buy through other distributors.
