I was thinking the same thing; as we already have a 5th wheel hitch. I was concerned that the frame couldn't handle the concentrated weight of a tractor. And i did have a trailer thad does work.

depending on how he builds his deck.. he can make that flimsy frame into something useable.. I'd judge how much to beef it based ont he tire/axle loads avail;able.. then build to suit.

So are you still going to have the suspension system attached to the 1/8th inch main frame? It sounds like you're going to have a lot of weight supported by a rather thin main beam. It doesn't sound healthy to me. Too much work and cost for a mediocre end result.

Your correct! I did not think about that, thank you for bringing that to my attention, heavey trailer + suspension system attached the thin tubing = collapsed tubing in time or possibley the first time I load it.
Question now is how can I fix this? Can I weld say 3/8" steel plate to the side walls of the tubing around were the leaf spring shakles are welded or is there a better solution? Speaking of welding, I lost my electricity yesterday in the 60 mph winds and the blizard like conditions. Since I am all electric out here I figured it was time to buy a generator. While looking at the generators I came across this one that was about 700 dollars more than just the plain O generator. The difference in the plain jane one and this one it is a welder also. How SWEET is that!!!! Hobart Champion 4500 generator/welder, 10 hp briggs and stratton overhead cam. I bought this while my power was out, then I got back home from the store and my power was back on, Darn the bad luck. Well now I have me a nicer welder than just a cracker box. Here a couple pics of it.

For protective headgear, I'd suggest a visit to the local saw/mower shop and get the helmet made for chain sawing.

I own this one and all you need are some good goggles. This puppy is perfect. The wire mesh face shield, and the ear phone, snap up out of the way when not needed.

I wasn't thinking so much about the vertical loads as the twisting and lateral loads when the trailer is moving in turns etc. You could borrow a page from the heavy duty truck frames and use an additional L frame reinforcement. Only in your case, it would have to be inverted. I think you'll be getting into this too deeply for what you want to achieve. I think the best thing is to decrease it's total length and build it as a light duty item. Sell it as such and hunt for a heavier unit that fits your needs better.

I think you are right! after looking at this trailer a little more it most likely will be lucky to handle 6000 lbs. I have a small 6 X 12 tandem axel utility trailer that is rated for 7000 lbs. and I have hauled a 6k skid on it before but won't ever do it again.
I believe I will go on and build the trailer and if the square tubing folds up or bends and breaks on me, then I will scrap what I can from it and build from ground up a new trailer frame out of channel and maybe some I beam.

Thanks for the picture of the quality head gear. I am not saying I am a expert but I have never worn protective gear and have found that usually when I am wearing safety glasses or anything of the nature whether cutting wood or metal while wearing the safety glasses is when I always get something in my eye. It is like a magnet, or a wind tunnel to your eye ball, So I have found it less likely to get debri in your eyes when not wearing protective lenses. Wierd sounding but it is true.
The only bad experience I have had with a chain saw was while I was cutting and cut through the toe of my leather boot. Luckily I always wear steel toe boots so I still have all my little piggys.

As K7LN says about the L angle it does add strenght to your frame and if it is on the bottom like my Shoreline boat trailer, when the springs mounts wear, you just jack up the trailer and roll the angles out with the axles attached. Made my replcing of spring mount a lot easier, no welding from below. The trailer was built with multiple sets of hole so as to let you adjust the wheel base length.

I get 8-12 of these a year, We wont pay for them anymore but will demo them on site. I wouldnt waste time or money on making it into a trailer for my purpouses but we haul very heavy loads for a pickup trailer combo.

On to the demo. these are like house trailers. once the roof is off the walls fold right down. You in particular will want to be careful because u can dammage the frame work prying on things.
Before I bought a MTL I would use the graple teeth around the top edge until I pushed in enough to get the roof to lift up. Same all the way around and it will usually fall inside, then grab one panel right at the corner with the graple and tilt down while backing up.
the fall right apart. Flip it over and shuck out the aluminum sides pul the wire and roll the debris into a pile for the property owner to do whatever he wants with it.

Trailer homes like house trailers are diffrent, I peal the aluminum off the outside with the grapple then bust a hole out in the side lift the roof up and drive the loader inside run to one end gently turn around and back out,,,, No level of safety clothing is sufficent for that. When I drive out all the wood is broken and the roof falls down, Peal the steel off of it roll the deck over and run the forks through knocking out the plywood floor. Roll all the debris into a pile for the land owner

It is ugly but it works in short order.. Have fun
