i have a John deere 2440 with about 45-50 HP. King Kutter recommends their
4' tiller for any subcompact tractro up to 25 HP. Is my tractor TOO much for the tiller? Is that possible?

Assuming the slip clutch or shear bolts are correctly sized, I don't see what the problem would be. 4 feet is going to be narrow for your tire tracks.

As long as you have the proper shear pins, slip clutch etc. and the clutch does slip when it is supposed to you wont have any issues as krazsk has mentioned.

I would be more worried about the slip clutch being clean and making sure it works properly is so equiped as you can wad a roller chain really quickly.

What you want do is break the soil completely.

You will need ot make your initial full width pass very slowly and then take hal passes for the remainder of the width.

After this is done you shoud check or any ridges along the edges of tilled width and if so till at a right angle repeating the same steps.

If you have access to mason sand from a gravel pit this would be a good time to add some as well as any green manure or compost.

Youre going to have to set the slip clutch high enuf that it will start to significantly bog your engine before it slips. Otherwise you will burn the slip clutch up real quick because you wont have a good indication of imminent or ongoing overload. Hopefully the telescoping PTO shaft will be stong enuf that it wont twist ~70HP x 540 rpm torque.

krazsk, the tiller is offset to cover up the tire tracks

I ran an offset tiller on my Cub Cadet for 14 years..............

I hated that thing

Get to the end of the garden..........1 tire on solid ground, tiller is on a sharp angle. Turn the other way..........now the exposed tire is sinking in the soft dirt. Just created more problems with weeding and so forth, than what it was worth. JMHO
