Don,
I understand the problem and agree with your point, just correcting the hp figures.

Now lets load down that 60 hp pto rated tractor till it groans.

I understand the 4' King Kutter is a little lightweight for my tractor. I'm just trying to prove it to my grandpa . I am pushing for the 6' King Kutter tiller however 6' (72") still isnt wide enough to cover the tracks on my 2440 with its 87.8" wheelbase. I believe 6' is as big as King Kutter goes but i'm not positive. I would like to stick with the King Kutter because i've heard nothing but good about them and they are a reasonable price

I wasn't going to responded to this, but since you double posted it.........I will now.

To take a 25 horse implement, and to set it to slip with 'signifigant bog' on a 50 horsepower tractor........is just asking to tear the implement completely to pieces.

Taking that advice will have pieces scattered over a 100 square yard area at the very minimum and should never, ever be attempted by anyone.

Get the factory manual and set it to factory specs. But don't ever set a 25 horse implement, to operate in this manner on a 50 horse tractor.

EDIT: The best advice to give, is ..........set to factory specs...........and if it slips during operation..........slow down, and/or don't till as deep. And if satisfactory performance can't be achieved, buy a properly sized tiller for the tractor.
Wrong. Do you have any idea the instant horsepower used in breaking a shearbolt at 540 rpm? Unless youre using pretty little shear bolts its well above 50HP. Yet its common to see 30 - 40 HP bushogs using 3/8" shearbolts. These take about 100 HP to shear. It is certain that a well designed 25 HP Ag gearbox will take 50 HP without immediate damage. Otherwise it wouldnt sustain the anticipated unexpected circumstances --you would damage it virtually every time you hit a rock. 50HP continuous would be a real problem, but if the clutch is set to more than 50 the tractor will bog right down and youll know to modify your technique. If you set it for 25HP with a 50HP engine you will have only the most subtle indication of load before it slips, and if not caught you will burn the clutch as soon as you hit a hard spot.

I suppose if you had a 3 speed pto like my tractors have, you could put it in 1000 rpm range, throttle way back to half throttle of what it takes to make 540 RPM which would then reduce your maximum HP available by probable at least half . If you wanted to be really accurate, get a rpm meter and check what engine rpm gives you 540 with it set on 1000 rpm range. Then you would not only save fuel, you would hear the engine groan a bit before the clutch slipped. The tiller would still be turning at the recommended RPM also.

A good solution. Might be just right with a 60HP engine running at 1250rpm or so. Running them a little fast isnt a problem, so absolute accuracy is not essential.

I hear you but I can say the Deere 681 would be a very good fit for you and a good tiller too. If I had it to do over again I would have chosen the 681 over the 673, slightly wider cut and slightly larger tine diameter for an additional 1" depth of cut. The 681 tills about 8" depth.

How much does that tiller sell for?

Deere list the 681 tiller for $4830. msrp. Should be able to buy for $4000. This is made by Maschio(spelling?) and you could probably save some money buying under their own label. About $3000+ aprroximately.

While it isn't cheap neither is a good disk.

In 14 years, I could never come up with a workable plan, for my offset tiller, on a 50 by 50 foot garden area, to make everything work to my satisfaction. Either tire tracks compressing the dirt 30 inches in from the end, or the last 36 inches dug in on a 45 degree angle, making the last row or 2 hard digging with the spade shovel.

would take driving out the headland and around the tilled area for a new pass from the original direction, rinse, repeat till all of it is tilled with no reverse direction tilling and running over tilled earth. like I said. lots of legwork...
