Being a daddy sure is great. I highly recommend it.

Yesterday we fired up our Quadrafire 7100 wood burning fireplace for the first time. The instructions said to clean the fireplace with Windex before using it.

After firing it up, the results were not what we hoped. With the glass doors closed, the fire shuts down until the flames die out and the coals just smolder as is shown in the picture above. If we crack the doors open, the fire immediately flames up and starts burning hotter.
It is obvious that the fireplace is not getting enough air for combustion. The fireplace has two paths for combustion air. We have a flexible duct that feeds combustion air from outside the house directly to the fireplace. In the picture, the duct is running parallel to and just to the right of the white plumbing drain pipe. You can see where the duct turns upward to feed air to the fireplace just above. There is a damper control at the fireplace that opens and closes that pathway.
The second source of combustion air in the front of the fireplace and is supplied from the room. There is a complicated control that automatically feeds combustion air to the fireplace.
We are not sure which air pathway is not working; it is possible that both pathways are not working. The chimney seems to draft well enough because we get a good fire as soon as we crack the glass doors.
We are going to have to contact the fireplace company and get them to look at it. This fireplace was quite expensive and is the central feature of our house. We certainly want it to work. Lets hope the company will provide good support.
