Being a daddy sure is great. I highly recommend it.

That is so cute!

OK, that second photo is hilarious. That what kids are great for. Funny moments. We have plenty of ours stored away. Our daughter (11 now) just hates when we bring them up :)

Yesterday we fired up our Quadrafire 7100 wood burning fireplace for the first time. The instructions said to clean the fireplace with Windex before using it.

After firing it up, the results were not what we hoped. With the glass doors closed, the fire shuts down until the flames die out and the coals just smolder as is shown in the picture above. If we crack the doors open, the fire immediately flames up and starts burning hotter.

It is obvious that the fireplace is not getting enough air for combustion. The fireplace has two paths for combustion air. We have a flexible duct that feeds combustion air from outside the house directly to the fireplace. In the picture, the duct is running parallel to and just to the right of the white plumbing drain pipe. You can see where the duct turns upward to feed air to the fireplace just above. There is a damper control at the fireplace that opens and closes that pathway.

The second source of combustion air in the front of the fireplace and is supplied from the room. There is a complicated control that automatically feeds combustion air to the fireplace.

We are not sure which air pathway is not working; it is possible that both pathways are not working. The chimney seems to draft well enough because we get a good fire as soon as we crack the glass doors.

We are going to have to contact the fireplace company and get them to look at it. This fireplace was quite expensive and is the central feature of our house. We certainly want it to work. Lets hope the company will provide good support.

Today I moved some firewood into the garage with optimism that we'll get the fireplace issues worked out. I've been under the weather this week and am finally feeling a little better. It was great to be able to get outside and accomplish something. The firewood was down the hill where our septic field runs through the trees. We had some firewood down there that we stacked when our septic drain lines were installed. That area is too steep to reach with the tractor or wheelbarrow so I carried it all by hand up the hill.

Today is a beautiful day. My little girl and I took a walk through the woods along the ridge line. Moments like these are what makes living here seem worth all the work it has taken to get to this point.

When she rides on my shoulders, she uses my ears for handholds. I have found that it's important, for the sake of my ears, to keep her fingernails clipped. You can see the Cumberland Mountains in the background through the trees.

Your wife let you bring that wheelbarrow into the new livingroom? Mine would have had a total fit.
