It was full of water when it blew. All I can figure is that there was a residual amount of gas in the crevices that was forced out by the heat of the torch. In any case, that was the last tank I'll ever apply flame to.

That would be a big shock. Full of water is supposed to be OK.

I have had good results using a hot glue gun.
The glue sticks are basically polyetheline which is same as most plastic tanks so melting and swirling or mixing with heat does the trick.
For minor pin holes, a simple soldering iron and a swirling action will melt and seal the holes.
Epoxy or fiberglass resins simply do not adhere to poly, just let some resin set up in a poly container and see how easily you can peel it all away with a screwdriver. The whole skin will simply pull away like a sheet of paper.

I have just purchased Loctite Radiator and Petrol Tank Repair Kit. I will be trying it on a two stroke motor tank. Previous posts have suggested washing with acetone so I will do so.
Hope to get time this weekend so will let you know what happens.

Devcon Plastic Welder II is a two part adhesive specifically made to bond plastics. It cures slightly flexible.
It's avail at Wally World (although it is made in America!) or mail order fr McMaster-Carr.
