JOHN DEERE 310AD BACKHOE
JUST PURCHASED A 310AD BACKHOE WITHOUT OPERATING IT.FIRST TIME AT CONTROLS ,THE CLUTCH SEEMS TO BE SLIPPING.I GET UNDERNEATH TO CHECK OUT THE ADJUSTMENT,AND REALIZE THERE IS NO ARM ON THE CLUTCH ROD TO THE THROWOUT BEARING SHAFT.I SAW THE PREVIOUS OWNER LOAD AND UNLOAD ON THE TRAILER ,BUT SEEMED A BIT SLUGGISH,HOW CAN IT OPERATE WITHOUT OUT THAT SHAFT CONNECTED,ANY EXPLANATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.THANKS

I have a 310C that may be similar. My clutch doesn't work since I bought it about a year ago and it doesn't seem to much matter. To operate the unit or to change gears you just use the reverser. I'm sure others here can explain it better, but basically think of the reverser as an automatic transmission out of a car, but with just one forward gear and one reverse. Behind that is a 4 speed transmission (thing automotive stick shift). To change from one gear to another, which you don't really do that often, all you do is move the reverser in to neutral, shift the four speed, and put the reverser back into gear.

On my 310C I use 2nd gear 90% of the time. Its fast enough to be effiecient and doesn't bog except for the biggest, toughest piles or when clearing bush, then its time for first gear. The odd time I need to cover some ground, then we get to third or fourth. Just make sure you are rolling along in second/third to shift to fourth. You likely won't be able to pull fourth gear from a stand still.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear that clutch doesn't have all parts. If it's sluggish to get moving you need to change hyd filters and clean sump screen. I have found out it always pays to test drive before purchase.

Low trans fluid level will also cause the wet clutch of the reverser to slip. Not a little low, but real low. Being a "new to you" machine, change filter, clean screen and change the fluid
