Fuel costs less than rebuilding an engine. Lugging the engine is the best way to shorten its life. Keep the rpms up.

The best RPM for fuel economy is 0rpm the best for FEL will vary greatly depending on what you are doing.

No matter what I never run anything under 1500rpm that's where I will start, and as soon as it lugs or starts to slow down a lot I`ll bump it.

For plowing I normally use around 1900-2100.
Moving dirt 2000-2500 depending how much, and what's in it.

I would say most of the time I run 1900-2300 and go above if I have a heavy item.

Depending on how many hours you run your tractor a year (I don't think too many on here are currently running a working farm - If you were you wouldn't have time to be on here:laughing:) It probably only means several dollars a year and if your doing this for recreation Let 'er rip and enjoy yourself! The most fuel efficient thing to do is buy a townhouse and walk to the grocery store and work!

I personally like to vary the RMP on any motor. Maybe not while using it but each day I use it I'll adjust some.

Sums up my philosophy, too. Never do anything under 1500 rpm, not even move the tractor. Any real work starts at 2000 rpm, heavy work starts about 2300 rpm. If they wanted you to run it slow, they wouldn't have geared the PTO to run at 540 rpm when the tractor is practically wide open.

Too low RPM's makes my loader run to slow. Too high RPM's makes my loader run to "jerky". I run the RPM's that makes the loader work the smoothest with out lugging the motor.
