That Neighbor You'll NEVER Plow Out / Snowblow Again !

years ago, i used to happily plow out the neighbors driveways for free....the thank yous were enuf. back when diesel was $1.10 a gal.

A few years back, one of them actually called me and yelled at me cause i didnt plow him out.....he hardly ever even told me thank you, and surely never paid me one cent for the work. i told him where he could shove my snowblower. Since then, i only plow for people that pay me. I dont charge much, but it helps pay for fuel, maint and repairs.

no more free rides. People take advantage of you too easily.

Just a bit of humour not completely on topic

My son 17 at the time had the chor of shovelling driveways (2) and walkways (3) when we lived in town before he moved out on his own. One day after about 16 inches of the white stuff as he was bundling up to head out and shovel, he asked me what I was going to do when he moved out about all the snow. I replied I would buy a snow blower. He asked why I didn't buy one then and I replied I already had a model I would get at least another year out of.

He moved out the following spring. It was good while it lasted.

He cost a lot more than a snow blower--food room car college etc. You could of had a nice tractor!

I plow the town road as well as the neighbor's two drives unless he beats me to it. :)

I often get a 12 pack and sometimes a dinner for two out of it. Once he had to replace his new brick landscaping wall because I didn't know exactly where it was. I apologized and he said not to worry about it.

Sometimes the one neighbor will ask me to move his snow berms back as he can't push it any further with his ATV/blade. I do, but wouldn't take any pay if he offered. Glad to help and glad to be in a position where I can help.

Someday I won't be able to do it, and don't look forward to it or even want to think about it.

I plow our drive and four other neighbors' drives (3 elderly, 1 my age and capable). Takes about 2-4 hours depending on accumulation. Oddly enough, the only neighbors that have offered compensation of any kind are the ones least able to pay for it and the one that has never offered is the one I would be happy to charge. Even if only enough to cover a little diesel. Same thing holds true when I maintain/repair or have to add gravel to the portion of the road we all share.

Here's the kicker. The neighbor most able to help with the costs but never offers is the son of our most elderly neighbor (different households). Guess the apple can indeed fall further from the tree than one might expect.

No matter, the satisfaction I get from being able to help our older neighbors far outweighs the lack of concern shown by one. Save him, we are blessed with great neighbors.

I've always helped the neighbors clear snow, when I lived in the cty and now where I live in the country. I always finsih my property first but then I'll make the rounds to see who still needs help. I usually get a "thank you" or a wave but never expect or ask for payment. I have a neighbor that is a GC and has a bobcat. Times have been tough for him and I know he needs money. Lately he has gotten to our neighbors before me. He may be getting paid for clearing their drives.

I've got 3 guys who didn't pay. One is well to do, keeps saying he'll pay someday since 4 years ago. One is a small business owner who has hard times but he's got a sizable bill I've carried 3 years. Last is a renter, convinced me to drive 45 minutes to open up a house that was vacant all winter, spent over an hour then he tells me he has no money, try calling in a few weeks. Never saw a penny.

I have a friend who plows. He has (several times) re-plowed snow back onto a driveway after being stiffed. He generally likes to leave about a 10' pile right at the end, then yell, " See ya in the spring!!" on the way out. Hilarious.

Reminds me of my dishwasher problem.

"I think I might have a problem with my dishwasher."
"Why"
'It's making a funny noise."
"What does it sound like?"
(In Monty-Python inspired female voice) "I HATE DOING DISHES!"
