Deere X728

Well I am an owner who is well pleased with the diesel X749 and no it isn't necessary to run it at full throttle for the majority of the time. Fast idle and up depending on the task I do mow at full throttle on a smooth lawn. Using a 5' landscape rake 1/2 throttle is fine.

If you are satisfied running at less than WOT while under load then that is fine since I know others do it also. I wasn't referring to performance though, WOT is recommended for the hydraulic system.

WOT is recommended for the hydraulic system.

What is the recommendation based on? Obviously to get full gpm rating you would need to run it at full rpm, but full flow is not needed most of the time. The cylinders are small and react quickly and no problems with the steering at idle either.

Hmm... I stopped in at the link provided and sifted through some of the "rhetoric"!

Some of it was down right goofy!

Marine applications, airplane applications; and of course Hydro uses and WOT.

Whoa...

And did you know that the throttle plate in a gas engine can change the compression ratio?

I kid you not!!??!

For some of those fellows that posted in that particular thread - I don't believe I'd hand over the keys to any of my equipment!

And just think, I was a member there at one time:laughing:
Way to many babies for me.

One more advantage that I see with diesels is that when it gets under heavy load, it slows down but won't quit because of the low RPM torque. In other words you don't have to play with the speed settings as much. That is true for mowing and other things I have done. My Simplicity Legacy with 25HP air cooled Kohler was very quick to die if I was not quick enough to stop the PTO or stop moving.
As far as running RPM, I like to give it just what it needs to get the job done. I mow in high gear, 2/3 throttle with my 24HP 855 with 60in MMM. No comparisson possible between the 2 tractors. Next garden tractor I get will be Diesel unless I can find a better engine than what was in the Simplicity. I heard that the older Onan gas engine were much harder to kill so they must have had more low end torque.
Anyway. Just my 2 cents

I've got an x749 and love it. plenty of torque and staying power when I threw heavy load at it.
