OK, wife says we can replace the Troy Bilt Horse with a four wheeler, but must be used model as the budget is limited.

Found this site which lists their opinions of the best used compact tractors under $6000. Compact Tractors: Kubota John Deere Yanmar Tractors For Sale

Want tractor for gardening, later for snow removal. Do not have any other needs that I can think of.

I would like your opinions if they coincide with or are different than the site listed herein. Also, your reasons for the opinion.

The site seemed to make some sense to me, but not sure if it reflects the real world of users like yourselves.

Don't think a compact tractor is a four wheeler.
What is it that you want?

Deere lawn tractors that are under $6000 used, and are good solid tractors are what I have, that being the Deere 425 and the Deere 455.

Double that price to get a compact tractor with FEL.

Non-Deere brands are usually lower in used value. But all depends on condition.

Your budget will limit you some so don't expect to get many (quality) implements in a package etc..

If you're patient and want to get the most ideal tractor (for your needs) for the money...keep shopping...

...stop at all the dealers and call any others that are nearby...tell them what you're looking for and to keep you in mind when a trade in is available...

be flexable on brand names...don't overlook a suitable tractor just because it's not green...

The 855 and 870 tractors go an easy $10K.

Any thoughts on how big a tractor you want? HP?
How much snow removal and how often? How big a plot do you want to till?

A complete guess, but I'm thinking an old Ford might do the job for you. You'll want to be able to troubleshoot and tinker with this old iron. Soundguy is the resident expert on those tractors, so search for some of his posts.

Might as well see what you can find on Craigslist.

You do know that several of the tractors mentioned at the top of the list were 2 wd tractors. I have a Deere 820 that is worth around $7500 in excellent shape and is 31 hp pto. This is a 4000 lb tractor 1973 model good tractor close to your budget. Unless you have a need for a tractor this size though I would look into a garden tractor similar to what Beenthere mentioned.

I have an X749 which is similar to the 4xx series garden tractors and think any of these would do what you wan't. Something you might wan't to consider is working up a package with the needed attachments and putting the $6000 down and finance the balance with a small note. I say this because in my area it has been impossible to find any used package deals. I gave up and bought new and am adding the attachments as I go.
