Not really just good neighbors !

If everyone would be good neighbors (good to others) then this world would be a better place.

I have one neighbor that has health issues and they hire somebody to plow out their driveway. Every now and then, the plow guy piles the snow by their front door. Which is okay until spring when it melts and runs into their basement. So I few times over the winter I will go over and clean up the mess. Gives me a chance to play on the tractor and it helps them out. I always get a huge thank you and often a pie out of it, I have never asked for anything. My other neighbor plows out his house and our private road, charges everybody on the road $25/plow each. A few years ago, hours before a major storm, he called up and said he would not longer be plowing us out and for us to make other arrangements as we needed it done too early for him to be bothered to get up that early. My wife is manager at a hardware store and needs to be leaving by 6am, I am away from home about 15 days a month. I put studded snows on my truck and showed the wife how to run the tractor with the rear blade so we move the snow ourselves now. I asked him if I found somebody to plow us out, would he help with the expense of plowing the road. He acted indignant and said NO. He expects us to share the cost with him, but he won't share the costs with us. He still sends us bills for him plowing our road, but he refuses to share the cost with us... His bills go straight in the circular file and I no longer offer to help him out.

So let me see if I got this right. You are now doing the plowing and he refuses to pay the same $25 he was charging you, when he was doing it? How about the other neighbors, are they paying you?

We plow at 6am when wife goes out, he plows again at 8am when he goes out. We plow again when wife comes home from work at 3pm, he plows again when he comes home at 5pm. He lives further down the road, we only plow from our house to the main road. He charges everybody, including me, $25/plow, I don't charge anybody. I have ignored his bills for 3 years. To add to the issues, two of the other homes on the steet are relatives of his and the rest of us strongly suspect they are not being charged.

I don't do it for money, in fact I refuse money.
I get unexpected cakes, cookies and other BAD FOR ME edibles delivered to the back door (-:

I should feel a bit sorry for the folk at the end of the road, one of their sons has influenced my sons' opinions of their whole family and I've developed a tendency to not help them out with anything/everything.
They were dead last on my "folks to help" list this winter.
Maybe I need a belated NYR (new year's resolution) - separate my attitude towards him from my attitude towards them ?
Yeah, I can do that - and will.

We used to live in the city, I got tired of shoveling so purchased a quad with winch and 4' plow. Since there were 5 other houses on this dead end street, and the drives where short I did ours, the 5 drives, the sidewalks 1 block each way at the open end of the street and even did the street since the city usually didn't get to it until the next day. My neighbors always gave me thumbs up, nods and thank yous. I felt greatful I could help out. The winter before we moved I started doing the next street over with 3 times the drives and vehicles in the street. I didn't see as many people there, but one lady insisted she pay me for it even though I told her no thank you. She had lost her husband earlier that year was her story and she claimed it would make her feel better if I accepted it.

Continuing story,
When we moved to the country the quad couldn't keep up so borrowed my cousins 861 (ultimately bought) to finish out season. Following year bought 3038e and started doing neighbors in the rental property beside us. The owner of the rental property live behind us and operates a gravel pit. Anyway when spring broke the owner was spreading gravel on the road in front of our house. I asked if I could purchase a bucket load and when it was deliverd, I asked what do I owe, he said nothing, that's what neighbors are for. When the renters moved out, they stopped by, dropped off a thank you card and left his number to call incase I ever need any help doing anything.(I threw the number away).
I even try to scrap the road to remove some of the chatter bumps when spring nears. All in all I try to help out when I can just because I figure no good deed goes without notice.

Sometimes "no good deed goes unpunished"

I help several neighbors with snow plowing drives and snow blowing up to 600+ feet of town sidewalk. One year I sucked up a just deliverd 2 inch thick phone book  Shreaded the heck out of it, before it siezed up the second stage paddle, leaving a very pronounced bulge in the housing. Probably came close to blowing up the thing, but it still works today.

Try to picture, chugging along working hard throwing snow, then clunk clunk clunk, bang! then total silence except for the pretty yellow confetti floating around the freshly fallen snow. Was Sureal for those few seconds I had no idea what just happened

JB.

I do wonder sometimes if being nice will ever backfire on me???? Since like several have stated, once you start, then some come to expect it.
