That Neighbor You'll NEVER Plow Out / Snowblow Again !

Most of my neighbors are pretty good.1 1/4 miles to my drive and another 1/4 mile to the last neighbor. I work days so usually must plow at night 1 1/2 hours minimum if I use the front blade longer if I need to use the blower. I like using my tractor it makes for long days Just to do the road. when people ask if I can help them I will but I let them know I'm not interested in plowing for money. and please get there own rig. I believe if you live in the woods you need to be self sufficient. Can't rely on other people for every day stuff like snow.
Up here you can't get anyone to cone up to plow at all.So if you cant take care of yourself better move into town.
Don't get me wrong we all work together when needed, But that's just it we work together.Every one looks out for each other.[well most of us do] there is always one that thinks why should they do anything when you have to go past them any way.
Like a great man said "You can't fix stupid"

well said. also noted, my tractor is not my toy. its a tool. a very expensive tool. and while i don't mind helping out people on an occasional basis, i didn't spend multiple 10's of thousands of my hard earned money to plow out their driveway. Ill always help out a neighbor that has just moved in and not used to the weather, but after a few years, they better have their ducks in a row.

We've all experienced those dead beats.
My *** hole neighbor asked me to keep the end of my yards cleaned out because his wife couldn't see past the snow bank, so I did and his son would come along with thier atv and fill it back in, whoops....didn't do that any more, she can take the same risk I do when their snow bank gets too high for me to see.......an eye for an eye

I'm very fortunate. I have good neighbors. I'm also fairly self-sufficient with the exception of mechanical breakdowns. During one breakdown one of my neighbors brought over his couple of hundred thousand dollar tractor & kept my drive clear until mine came back from the shop. I was really lucky to be able to send my tractor with him when he was moving hay & needed another tractor. I'm still trying to get even with him. I hope God let's me live long enough that I can show my appreciation for all he's done for me. All my neighbors are the same way. They more than pay me for the little I can do for them by giving me free reign to hunt on their property. God bless these good people. I thank God I live where I do.

A couple of quick stories re snow.

When I started my snow plow business I vowed to help where i could for free. One day I drove by and this old lady was shoveling a mountain of snow at the end of her drive way. I went out of my way to turn around back in and proceed to plow it for her FOR FREE. She started swinging her snow shovel at me and my truck and almost broke my window - BYE BYE Granny I was only trying to help.

Next guy was stuck with his hood up deep in a Wal Mart parking lot, only car there and late at night. I offered a jump FOR FREE and got his started. Not even a thank you. OKKKK, I asked him to make sure his battery was charged ( knowing it wasn't ) so I said shut it off and try starting it again. OK he said, then CLICK, CLICK, CLICK. I got back in my warm truck and said I hope you thank the next guy that comes over to help you - BY BYE.

This was the last time I ever offered help. A guy was in a ditch BAD, again no thanking me for stopping etc. so I said " I can pull you out but it wail cost you $50.00. He said sorry I don't have any money. I said OK I would have done it for free if you showed some appreciation but BY BYE. Next thing he pulled out a roll of money and paid me twice what I wanted.

Yep sad that so many ungrateful people out there, making me turn and not be as helpful as I otherwise would be.

Well after nine years in the homeowners' association, I have a new neighbor who will shovel 1/2 mile before he gets his two vehicles out of the snow. The couple moved in last year right before the big snows in my area. We live in the mountains and this guy lives up a very steep gravel road. My tractor was spinning last year without plowing trying to get up to his house. I had to get chains in order to keep from turning sideways to do his driveway. The homeowners' association purchased these for me. I spent 4-5 hours last winter working on this guys road so he could get out to get groceries.

This year he has made a formal complaint about another neighbor's son riding his dirt bike between 4-5 pm each day. The neighbor lives 1/4 mile away on 12 acres from this guy! He has also complained about the current road conditions. He said the roadway is improperly maintained and we don't purchase gravel but once a year. He pays $200 per year which will cover about 14 tons of gravel on a good day and will only cover part of his roadway. I have been taking care of the roadway for years without compensation after flooding and snow.

I have decided that I will stop plowing the roadway as it starts up toward his house. This will help another nice neighbor and hopefully it will keep the other guy snowed in for about a month.

I've got a few stories on this issues. All snow stories.
1. Back in 1976 or so we had the great blizzards around here. I was driving my families 1964 Land Rover at the time just having turned 16 it was like having a Porsche lol. But it also happened to be the worst winters we've ever seen here. And there were a couple people stuck that I towed out with a chain for $5. Now that doesn't seem like much but, back then I could get 1/2 tank of gas for that or more. And the people were happy to get pulled out. One was not so happy with me for charging them $5 for the same pull job in a dept store parking lot ! But hey, that's free enterprise. Either you push it out yourself or have me with 4wd. They paid grudgingly.
2. Fast forward a number of years with no snow till we had a house across the street from a retired truck driver. He was overweight and when it snowed like mad I could see he was puffing and getting red in the face. He was a heart attack waiting to happen and happen it finally did a number of years later. But, I went over with my Toro 1800 electric snowblower with my own 200ft electric cord I would use my electric to blow his driveway cause I didn't want to see him have a heart attack in the front yard. Now I didn't do it every time it snowed as he "needed the exercise" he always told me. So I only went over when it was at least 10" or more. He always thanked me and I never received anything from other than that. But that was ok cause I just didn't want to see him pass away trying to shovel the snow. He did pass away one summer in a locked up house and was not found for 2 weeks. His name was "Bucky" he told me. I never knew his real name. He was a nice guy though.
3. Since then I bought a Steiner with a lot of nice winter attachments. A plow blade, a bucket lift, a power blower and the rotating brush. And we've since moved to a driveway with a 450ft entrance. Not for the faint of heart or a 18" snowblower lol. Which I sold to someone i worked with for $50. Now, at this house I do the little old lady down the street who's brother owned the house I'm in. I feel like she was a PIA to him and I'm happy to oblige to help her as she is 86 and needs it. Another neighbor does her 3 acre grass cutting in the summer with her old ZTR from 1980's or so. And she keeps it maintained for him. But the winter snow duties are mine and i don't mind it as the family helped us purchase the home here from them so I can't complain at all. And it's a really nice place. So sometimes one hand rubs the other and that's how life works for everyone. A lot of times it may not seem that way, but all my neighbors see me driving up the street with the STeiner and if anyone wants a hand with their drives (and I ask them if they are standing out there) a friendly wave is all that's needed to drop the brush and in two minutes it's done and perfectly clear. That brush is better than anything I've ever used in my lifetime clearing snow and you never need salt as long as the sun even thinks of coming through the clouds.

Steinering the snow Steve
PS... I've had some nice baked goods from some of them !
