F450 with PTO???

   / F450 with PTO??? #21
All late model Ford F-250's with the Torque Shift Tranny, 2003 1/2 and later, have this option. I have seen a F-250 with a compressor and one with a generator. Nice option to have. I believe Ford is the only one still putting them on. I know GM took it off the Allison a few years back and not too sure about the Cummins powered Dodges.

Chris

No reason someone wouldn't want it on a pick up, but more suited for the chassis upfit market.

Dodge had them on class 3, 4 and 5 chassis trucks since 07 with the Aisin auto 6 speed, not sure about standard tranny or pick ups though.

For refrigerated trucks, sometimes a refrigerant compressor is run off the PTO.

Are you seriously complaining about having problems with a 17 yr old truck...?

I'm with Dmace on this one.

P.S.
My "71" Chevelle started leaking 90W all over my garage floor this winter. Turns out that the tailshaft seal dried out on the Crappy Muncie 4 speed. Not only did GM use low quality seals, but did not provide any provisions to mount a PTO to the M22 Rock Crusher.
Pictures of the oil stain and lack of a PTO plate can be posted upon request.

Well.... rather than pictures... why not just pull that crappy Muncie out and send it to me. I will, in turn, send you a very nice, Saginaw 4 speed that only needs the teeth put back on several gears and , maybe a mainshaft..

Maybe if you still have most of the sawed off teeth so I can weld them back on....... Na, my conscience won't let me take advantage of another TBN member like that. :D:

Is there realy such high demand on a off the shelf truck to run a PTO? Seems like these are highly specialized machines that would be cheaper to make one at a time vice changing an entire production line.

I like that Ford is keeping them in, Dodge also. My 05 Dmax was that last year they had it in the Allison I think. Heard they saved about $4 by taking it out but cost well over $1000 to have it added later.

I have never had the need for one but who knows? Just a nice feature. The other thing I liked with the Fords I had was because of the PTO they had a high idle program in them. It was not hooked up but there is info on the next to do so. Its just 1 wire under the dash you hook to a switch with 12V. I did it on my F-350 since it has the up-fitter switches. All I had to do was crimp on a wire and hooked it to one of the four switches.

The Ford up-fitter switches from the factory have 2 that are 10 amp and 2 that are 30 amp. A real nice clean way to put stuff in. I have one for the high idle and one for a power plug in the bed.

What good is high idle if your not using the PTO?

You had to "hot wire" your Ford for a fast idle setting?

FYI, the Dodge RAM diesel trucks (2004-present) ALL have a factory high idle setting (not just PTO trucks).
With the truck idling in park and e-brake set, press the Cruise ON switch followed by the SET switch. Idle increases to 1100. Use the ACCEL and COAST to raise or lower idle speed. I guess that is just another one of those Dodge/Cummins advances that the others added after Dodge did like an exhaust brake... ;)

Warming the engine in the cold winter mornings, powering high draw electrical equipment from your alternator, etc...

I have the manual adjustable idle built into my cruise buttons, I thought most trucks have that now? Also has an auto high idle for when it's very cold out.
I have the cover on the tranny, diddn't get the pto option though. It was not expensive so I'm not sure what you would get, just a shaft out the side.

I would love to have a 30 amp circuit in the back of the truck body, been thinking about an inverter for small power tools ;) Don't know if Dodge has something like that, might though since this truck was supposed to be built so upfitter ready. Gonna have to look into it.
