Plastic drum OK for diesel?

Just bought a used 55 gallon blue closed lid poly drum. Cost was $10. Got it from a trucking company. They have stacks of drums for sale. They said the drums had fruit juice in them. I rinsed the drum out when I got it home and hooked up a small fan into one of the bungs for several hours to dry it out and now it looks like new. I'll be ordering a barrel pump soon.

I just picked up a couple of 55gal'ers and what is a good way to rinse-out it. Hot water and soap? One looks like it had cooking oil in it.
Can't get a big brush down the hole to scrub it, so I'll have to rely on the soap and water to do the job.
I'll probably use a gal or two of diesel to do the final rinse.

Gary,
I used a pressure washer and soap and water. I got soaked and the barrel got cleaned.
I have cleaned rusted metal barrels by dumping a 5 gallon bucket of shale gravel in them and rolling them around for a while. Shaking the rocks back out is a chore.

I just received a 30 gal poly drum and a hand pump from Baytec. With S&H it cost me about $96. Still a lot cheaper than the $400 'gas caddies'.

The pump arrived missing some parts due to rough handeling by UPS. I called Baytec and they had the parts to me in 2 days.

Just waiting for some milder weather to put it togrther and fill it.

I don't know about the smaller plastic barrels, but the larger 55 gallon drums can most likely be obtained for - FREE- just by stopping in at any place that washes cars- such as automobile dealers, car washes, recon shops, etc. I have worked at an automobile dealer for many years, we go through many of them, most of the empties are cut in half and disposed of.

For anybody in New England, we have very heavy duty 55 gallon poly drums for free if you come pick them up. The flavoring needs to be rinsed out, but they'll last forever. Shipping not available; pick up in Waterbury, VT

I can see using the 55 gal drums are more convienient. Are most of you then getting the non-taxed fuel then? I can see a savings of .30 cents per gallon. My question is does anyone know what the law allows for people using diesel fuel. I was told that since I don't actually own a farm, that I can not legally have that fuel. Any business can not have it either such as land scapers/snow removal etc. Mowing lawns personal or for business can not have it either. Now I do have a FEL but only use if for some dirt moving and snow? I know that the fine for having this fuel can be pretty expensive.

Murph, theoretically at least, it seems that the laws on the federal tax should be the same everywhere, but the laws on the state tax are different in different states, so I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer unless he/she is referring to one particular state. I used to buy "off-road" but never "dyed" diesel myself and not have to pay the road tax, but of course, at one time, it was simply keeping a form on file with my distributor, but then the last couple of years, I had to have forms on file with the state and give the distributor a copy, so even if a person is talking about one particular state, the law is certainly subject to change.
