Rotary cutter size for 1070

I am looking to get either a medium duty or heavy duty cutter for my 1070. I am sure a 5' would be no problem, but what about a 6'? Do any of you guys have any advice? FYI, the 1070 is 39hp with 35 at the PTO.

I use to run a JD MX-6 (6 ft rotary cutter - rated for minimum of 30 HP PTO) behind my JD 4320 (40 HP PTO) with no problem. Any bigger cutting width beyond 6 feet will likely be too much for your 35 HP PTO. When transporting my MX-6 behind the 4320 I found I needed to go slower because the heavy attachment weight was like "the tail wagging the dog."

You should be fine with the MX-6; unless you plan on tackling 4" willows along the river bottom...

The weight of the mower is significant given the distance it hangs off the back end of your tractor but it's not so bad if you've got a FEL mounted, too.

I was planning to buy a MX-6 for my JD 970 as most average mowing work would have been manageable with the 30hp @ pto. My purposes were to keep the horse pasture trimmed up where the horses were skipping the less palatable grasses and leaving tall spots and "pool table" areas in a patchwork fashion.

No major brush work or reclamation of overgrown areas.

I have used my MX6 with all three of my tractors in my signature with no problems. Obviously the 4520 will walk through thick brush without bogging down at all.
