Point taken and appreciated. I warn people all the time when I see them running power tools without safety glasses or someone working around chemicals or fiberglass without a respirator. I'm particularly careful and protect my eyes, ears and lungs. I'll pay more attention to where I put my skin around active hydraulics. Thanks for the advice.

Jeff, congratulations on using your head and finding that relief pressure poppet. Let's hope that soon your photos will be of a workin' tractor.:)

Thanks Jinman. I cant wait to see if it's fixed now with ALL of the parts installed. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and I cant get to it today so it will probably be later on the week before I can get back to it. Im also going to take the top cover off the tranny and get the rest of that sludge out of there. It will also give me an opportunity to check the gears out too.

Glad to hear you're well on your way to getting this resolved.

And don't feel too badly about missing the poppet in the bucket. Same thing happened to me when I had to work on LOML's Taurus. Removed the power steering pump, hung it on the edge of a bucket and when I put the pump back on and started the car .... no power steering. I did all sorts of wacky things to bleed the system and get it working again. Talked to several people in the repair shops and one of them finally said, "Sounds like the relief in the pressure line is stuck." All I could say was, "What relief? There was no relief in MY line???"

Lo and behold, when I went home and poured the oil outta that bucket .... there was my relief in the bottom of the bucket. :ashamed:

Thankfully LOML only went 2 days w/o her power steering, but she was getting a tad cranky by that time. :)

That's just like my situation. I would have never thought that there were missing parts and I lost them. I really had a gut feeling the pump was junk and was going to just yank it and replace it. Lying under the tractor it just dawned on me that something was missing. I had even looked at the parts diagram and KNEW there was supposed to be more parts in there. I just assumed they'd be up in there and didn't really give it much thought. Add that to me not ever working on hydraulics and you've got a recipe for a mess. Glad all the guys here helped me through it. Special thanks to JC-Jetro...he stayed the course and helped me think it through really well.

It's amazing how much better hydraulics work with a clean filter, new fluid and ALL OF THE PARTS! HA!!!

Congratulations!

I bet you learned a lot during this experiment. Now we all know for sure which parts make it work.

Any idea where the metal shaving came from that you found on your filter?

Have fun with your tractor.

No idea where they came from. I looked @ the gears and they all look good so I imagine it was from grinding gears over the last 20 years of this tractor's life. Cleaned it out best I could. And yes...I learned more than I wanted to. :)
