Where do you draw the line between a garden tractor and a CUT?

Over on LMF, I have started a discussion as to what is the dividing line between the two...my argument is whether the machine has the ability to operate a backhoe attachment...if it will run a MMM and FEL and a 3 point attachment, it's a garden tractor.

But to me, when it will run a backhoe in addition to the other attachments, that qualifies it as a CUT. A new member on LMF has a Massey GC 2400, I researched his model and learned Massey sells the same basic model as a GC 2410 with backhoe capability. So, where do you guys draw the line? Thanks.

Why does it matter? Buy what you need to do the jobs you have.

My opinion is that it only matters to those that have machines that look like lawnmowers :laughing::laughing:

It matters to me, I rather have a big lawnmower rather then a small tractor.:thumbsup:
As the old saying goes, It's not the size of the lawn mower, it's the magic in it. Or was that about something else.:laughing::laughing:

Rather than take comments from the poke-a-stick-in-the-eye type folks so personally, it is best to just ignore them.

To me, it is not a very important issue regarding how to distinguish and classify different pieces of equipment. Just find a machine that will do the tasks required and who cares what it is called. Our 1970 Chevy Nova was considered a compact car in 1970. It had seating for six and was larger than most full sized cars of today and could be ordered with over 400HP! :laughing:

However, I do find it interesting to observe how people classify equipment. Most of it is marketing by the industry.

Personally, when I was tractor shopping, I was looking at frame sizes then specifying the largest HP engine available in that frame size. For instance, my tractor at the time came with three different engine sizes in virtually identical frames. I purchased the largest. :thumbsup:

Beg to differ on the horsepower available on the Nova, I had a '73 with the 350 4V and although that engine was downrated that year to reflect NET horsepower, it was never even close to having 400 from the factory in earlier years unless you want to include specialty models offered by dealers, like the Yenko.

Zinj's Rule of Thumb on Tractors.

Riding Mower: 1 - 5 hp (go cart with cutter blades)
Lawn Tractor: 5 - 10 hp
Garden Tractor: 10 - 15 hp
SCUT: 15 - 20 hp
CUT: 20 - 30 hp
UT: 30 - 50 hp
Farm Tractor: 50 hp and up
Monster Farm Tractors: Well, that's a D7 cat dozer (or bigger) on wheels.

Hp ranges are extremely variable. You could go plus or minus 50% of the low and the high values and still be in a range someone would consider to be the same category of tractor.

Oh great, now my 22hp riding mower is strutting around the machine shed puffing out its grill because it now thinks it's a CUT! I hate to think what will happen to it's ego when it backs up to the 2 bottom plow...
