Good advice --but I have a warm shop, tools, jacks, plenty of time and a service manual, also it only seem's to make a noise in reverse.

Thanks,
Rob

That's all well and good, Rob...but even if you open it up, would you know what you're looking at? I don't mean that harshly...but are you familar with gears and such?
Is it a bearing noise (something like a chirp) or a whine (possibly backlash)? "Powertrain" noise isn't too descriptive. You also wrote that you could not engage 4WD...but you only hear the noise in reverse. That seems to be two different issues...is that correct?
How long have you been hearing this noise?

I'm assuming the tractor is out of warranty. If not, anything you do could screw you if you need to make a claim.

The tractor has 1800 Hr.on it
The noise was more of a grinding thunk then it went away (along with the front wheel drive) It has made the noise about a year ago but it went away. I suspect it to be serious.
Thanks

Well, you could open it up and look for damage. That grinding/thunk sounds (to me) like a broken tooth or teeth and might be obvious to the eye.
If you can open the front differential, that would be where I'd start.

I went in, looks like it isn't to bad,the front of the front splined coupling is smooth inside. I think I will also need to replace the pinion shaft, but I don't know how to get it out. The front Axle bracket, front and rear bushing are gone.

Thanks,
Rob

Wow, all that with only 1800 hours on it? Was it driven in 4wd on tar all it's life?

I am the second owner,in the two years since I have had it it has rarely been on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive. I looks like there should be grease fitting at the bushings.
