Do you leave it sit for extended periods? I have 2 1999 Honda 450 ATV both will drain a battery if they sit for a while without running.

if batt voltage is good

check for corrosion, esp on plugs in batt compartment

I have not been all or done all......yet; but I have never heard of a honda starter going out.

Will it turn over? Sometimes (on a slope), I have to rock my quad back and fourth a little to get it into neutral.

I have heard of armatures getting worn on the sides where it lands after years and years of starting. It develops a pattern (so to speak). Plus there is only 360 degrees of surface for an armature to land on. The odds of it landing on the same spot are pretty good.......

Keeping all the connectors shinny is real important. I rarely let my 350 ES sit but I run a 5 watt solar charger on my wife's craftsman tractor; man, that thing cranks super strong every time.

Other idea; it may be a neutral safety switch?

Hope this helps

I had a Honda 4 wheeler years back and had starter issues a few times. It was hard on brushes. If the suggestions from the previous posts fail, take the starter to a good repair shop. They would install new brushes for me at a fraction of the cost of a new starter. If I remember correctly, they had to modify brushes that they had to fit instead of getting them from Honda.

I had the starter replaced on my 2000 Rancher two years ago. $158.00 including parts and labor.

I would call some dealers and get an estimate on a starter. Some dealers charge pretty high prices. My 2000 Rancher runs 365 days a year winter and summer. My wife uses it to hay the horses outdoors twice a day.
