How NOT to Wire a Garage Door Opener

With cable that large it should be painfully obvious something isn't right, at a glance. Who caught the mistake? And hopefully it was fixed before the panel was energized.

Yep! That's why the contractor was soooo embarrassed! The contractors building the house complained about power issues. We found it that day when we went to troubleshoot the problem which was in the pedestal connections.

Modern water heaters use PVC for the exhaust pipe. I have an old house with a state of the art Buderus boiler that runs at about 94% efficiency. It vents horizontal and you can rest your hand on the exhaust pipe and the pipe is pleasantly warm, not hot. By the time the exhaust gas comes out of the boiler every BTU of energy has been extracted from the fuel. As most of you know when you burn a hydrocarbon the result is carbon dioxide and water. Because of this condensation in the the exhaust pipe is a real problem so the pipe has a P-trap that dumps into the sump.
I put a HE gas furnace in an old house I was fixing up and had a similar set up with a PVC pipe for the exhaust.

When I was selling the house the buyer hired a house inspector and he walked the house during a cool spring day. The heater was running and there was some water vapor coming from the pipe. He walked up, put his hand under the exhaust and lamented that it was a shame the companies couldn't make a furnace that didn't waste so much heat. I tried to educate him, but he was a home inspector and obviously knew more than a professional engineer about such things.

Sigh.

They could have at least hid the wire on the neighbors side of the fence.:D

Red Green would be proud of the surge protector.

If there is ever any question about the safety of a project, just stand back and ask yourself "Would Red Green approve of this?" If the answer is yes.......

It's ok, they unplug it every Sat night. So, it's only used for 6 days. :D

U.S. Office of Compliance appears to only deal with the workplace, so their standard probably doesn't apply here. From looking at their page, they seem kind of like OSHA. And, I am sure OSHA has something to say about extension cords too.

Is the NEC even "law" in that sense of the word? If I (homeowner) do something that it says I can't, what happens? Obviously, I could fail a inspection if there were one for work being done. Not sure how that is or could be applied to or enforced with homeowners. Who would enforce it? Building inspector? Fire Marshall? SWAT team? Dog Catcher?

I would bet in some form or another, most of us have some violation of the NEC. If it were enforceable against homeowners, I am sure they would have seen it as a revenue stream by now and would at least be trying to enforce it at some level.

And, yes, I am ODD and I do buck the system and question everything like this. Not just being difficult, just me.

Isn't it obvious?! Who would enforce it?? How about: Black Opps Navy Seals along with Homeland InSequirity.

This is an incident that requires the full force of our 'governmint' someone shall pay, and big time. I'm thinkin' 'gitmo for the punishment?:confused2::)

My next door neighbor is also color blind , a retired fire captain . He always had his father-in-law do any electrical work for him as he was a retired electrician .

On one occasion though , in working on one of their many home improvement projects , ( they were remodeling their guest bathroom ) , they had planned on tiling the walls , so were tearing down the wallboard when they found a bathroom exhaust fan . " COOL , we will just buy a new exhaust fan and replace that old one " .

Long story short , me and better half were standing in the doorway when neighbor flipped the switch to check out the new fan . To this day I honestly believe that if the motor on that fan had not burned up , it would of ripped itself right out of the wall . Never checked the wiring and that section of the house was the original " Hippie Shack " that had been there from the start so the wiring was ????? to say the least .

Lasted maybe 1 to 2 seconds at most but sure seemed longer and I can only imagine the rpm's that the blade turned since it was a 110/120 fan hooked to 220/240 !! :ashamed:

What I meant by the ??? wiring is that there were NO 110/120 breakers , all were 220/240 in the original breaker box . When they added the addition's they also added a new main panel then ran a feeder to the old smaller panel and our beloved county inspector was fine with it but in his defense he " ASSUMED " that the old panel was just for the well pump , hot water heater and the heat pump and did not have any 110/120 circuits . Original owners had tapped into 1 leg on several 220/240 circuits before that my neighbor had found so he " ASSUMED " the fan was no different .

The lesson I learned many times through life is NEVER " ASSUME " anything especially electrical .

Speaking of color blind and electricity...

I used to work with a guy that had to have an encyclopedia for a brain. We were up on a roof once, working on a GE air-to-air heat pump. We're tearing into the control wiring and he says to me, "Which one's the blue with red tracer?" or something to that effect.

Being the new guy --and I mean Brand New-- I at first thought it was a test. I mean, here we are, playing around with 460 3-phase right next to the control wiring, and he asks ME which wire to touch??

Anyway, he explained that he was color blind... used to work on jets as a mech in the Air Force... he simply memorized entire wiring diagrams!! (But it might be a bit quicker if I just pointed out the right wire...)

I learned to respect his judgement!
