That's what I was thinking, although you can see paint on the romex in spots. Maybe last time they got lucky, and just the garage burned down, so they figured they'd just start again where they left off?

Jobs like this are why we all pay high insurance rates. If this caused the house to burn the insurnace company would pay out with out any issues they most likely would cancel him but they would pay the claim.
My thoughs are I would have love to seen the fuse box bet it had a stack pennies next to it:laughing:

Just to look at this from another perspective..... NOT trying to justify what they did.
Garage doors are intermittent use items. So, it's not like there is a load on that for a long time.
Maybe they DO turn the light switch on/off as the doors are used, so the wiring is not hot all the time.

Personally I dont see the fire hazard that you guys keep eluding to.
Is it done right? NO
Is it the way I would do it? NO
But I still dont see the fire hazard. Short of anyone walking into the line, or cutting the exposed wires anywhere. Yea, the extension cord is crappy, but garage door openers dont draw much juice either. 1/2 horse with a couple of lights? Maybe 500watts? and everything is exposed and not burried behind walls and insulation.
And everything is taped up and we really cant tell if there are wire nuts under it either.
If he just ran extension cords all the way, no tape, splices, surge protector, etc, and plugged it into an actual outlet, would there be anything wrog with that? I fail to see much differnece. Romex works fine, and the splice are neat and well taped.
Dont get me wrong, I am NOT saying this is right. And it certainly has its hazards. But I personally dont see it being THAT great of a FIRE hazard.

More or less agree, except for the first cord, the lamp cord. 500 watts is plenty for that little thing. How long do we think the whole kaboodle is? 50'? 75?

Wow. Now that is some really bad wiring.
I remember when I was 13 and we moved to a mobile home in Arkansas. I was underneath the mobile home fixing some water line when I noticed the main electrical wire laying on top of the ground and was just spliced with some electrical tape. I almost grabbed a hold of that live wire.
Would you believe it? It was done by a licensed electrician. His phone number was listed on the electrical panel on the inside of the house.
I confirmed with a neighbor that it was that electrician who did the wiring underneath. When he installed the wiring for a lady who previously lived there.
I was gonna call up the electrician and give him some $h!* for the way he hooked things up. But I never did call him.
You'd think a licensed electrician would know better than to splice a live main wire with 240 volts going through it with just tape and let it lay across the ground.
Heck I'm not licensed and I know better than that.

I am 16 years old. And even i know that is just straight up stupid of some, to get power from a light bulb socket. I seriously hope that was just for testing purposes.
