Nice set up....except you've got to run with the ROPS down. Not much protection there...

Nope I understand that, but that's its standard position for 95% of the time. Essentially flat where I operate and I'm on and off so frequently that the belt and ROPS are just not used.

Absolutely no endorsement of that practice, just admitting to it.

I will try to flip it up and see how things attach that way too. That rack system is very solid and has a lot of adjustment options in several directions.

What I was wondering is, for those that do use their ROPS, is if four holes maybe a quarter inch in dia. would reduce strength of the bar. I admit a failure may not ever happen but is it a possibility of a strike to the bar or rollover to cause it to fail.

sorry if this is a can of worms to some, Ky billhilly

As there have been about countless threads about modification of the ROPS (for any reason...but mostly to add lights), I'm sure we'll see a number of responses (both pro and con).
Basically, you're on your own if you modify the ROPS. Should you drill some holes and the ROPS fail in a rollover, it's a good possibility the manufacturer will not accept any responsibility and they'd likely win any post accident lawsuit.
So, you need to drill holes? There are alternative methods of affixing things to the ROPS.

It's out of warranty, I spit on solicitations to join class action suits for silly stuff like that, and if it rolls over,, who in ****'s fault is it but mine?!

That said, the 3/16 holes in the bar are far less likely to be a point of failure than the 3-position ROPS pin holes for raising or lowering it.

I've got a welder and could have welded something upon which to then mount the rack bases but it just didn't seem worth it. The heaviest thing I'll conceivaably put on that rack is a 13# chainsaw, so self tapping screws were the way to go.

BTW I don't carry the shotgun or rifles loaded or the chainsaw running! :) -WSJ

Then you've made your decision...

The manufacturers are covering their butts....just as the should do. Some modifications may be carefully thought out with maintaining the integrity of the ROPS. Other folks might just do a sloppy job and damage that ROPS (reducing any strength).
Problem is knowing who does the good job, who does the crappy job...so, there's that generic "No modification to the ROPS" stipulation.
