Rotary Cutter Sharpen or not to Sharpen that is the question

/ Sharpen or not to Sharpen that is the question #11
I have a little Makita that is light enough that I can hold it with one hand and the blade with the other. Wear leather gloves, long sleeves, and goggles.

sharpen them to cut lawn grass.. leave em 1/32nd dull for shattering brush.. kills the plant.. knicks the blade less.. etc.

I've noticed that none of the Deere operators manuals mention sharpening blades. Only replacement. An attempt to sell more blades?

I see what you mean...I pulled one at random from the Deere website (LX5 cutter) and nothing about sharpening I could find...

I was trying to find a picture of the blade profile that I was taught to put on the blades and couldn't find a thing.

The manual for my 1995 Bush Hog Squealer specified a 1/8" blunt edge, but I think the newer Bush Hog manuals only mention replacing blades; nothing about sharpening.

This thread prompted me to check the manual for my rotary cutter -- a Taylor-Pittsburgh 270 (circa 2000). The manual says to sharpen the blades, but gives no specifics about the recommended edge.

I have a relatively new Bad Boy ZTR lawn mower. Bad Boy does not recommend sharpening their "fusion hard weld blades," whatever that means.

I "sharpen" mine as per manual and pretty much like kOua and it works well on brush as well as grass. If I want a finish cut on grass, I use a RFM.

I'm going to guess the blades are case hardened or built up with a harder alloy weld then ground to a cutting edge.
Sharpening would remove that case hardening (which isn't very deep) or the weld.
I would expect that process if I'm correct) to give extended blade life (3-4 seasons, minimum). If it doesn't, it's a rip off IMHO. I'm leaning toward the "rip off" side.
