What did I do?

Yanmar 2001D ... I was using the front loader to move around some road base to spread on the driveway. I was using the differential lock and 4WD to get into and out of the pile of gravel. The ground was fairly soft around the pile. At one point the tractor just wouldn't go anymore or would just barely move. It seemed like the clutch engaged as it would still try to move forward or backward but only very little (slower than being in crawl). Tried shifting through all the gears and crawl still seems to work but nothing else (I moved it up to the barn in crawl). Later, after it stopped working I did smell something akin to burning rubber. I've drained the transmission oil and cleaned the filter (it really wasn't dirty) to no avail. The differential lock lever has a lot of play and doesn't seem to engage or disengage. I feel terrible for my poor tractor ... this is our first major problem. So tractor gurus ... What did I do and how bad is it? Thanks for any help. :thumbsup:

I guess that should be creep and not crawl.

Maybe you roasted the clutch? Will it move at all now?

That would be my guess too based on the smell.

It moves (what seems normal in creep) and even slower in other gears. How tough is he clutch to replace? I think I can load the tractor if I need to take it but if it's not to difficult could attempt. Thanks for your responses.

hate to say it but it sounds like clutch issues. I would check the adjustment first hoping it may be out of adjustment but its likely clutch replacement time.

Sounds like clutch I am with these guys on that and its not a hard job at all the loader will need to come off more than likely and jack stands will hold up the separate ends of the tractor when you separate it.

With that said I just replaced a clutch in a friends ym2420d and what was wrong with it once I tore it down was the clutch linkage lever and shaft inside the bell housing was rusted so bad the pedal wouldn't return and that caused the clutch to slip badly.

There wasn't any way to fix it from the outside anyway so it had to be separated. How does your pedal feel does it come back on its own real easy?

These things were operated in knee deep water sometimes and they actually have a link on the clutch pedal to hold the clutch down after use so the clutch disc doesn't rust up to the flywheel and pressure plate but the shafts still rust fwtw.

Thanks everyone ... Sounds like it is the clutch. Chalk this one up to "expensive lesson learned".
