Convertible? Flat bed to enclosed?

In our province at least, illegal to haul animals in open top trailer.

Crazy, crazy, stupid, nosey, legislators meddling in everyone else's business!! What are they trying to accomplish?
Does that mean no kids in the back seat of a convertible car? Dog in the back of the pickup truck?

Sorry for the rant. I digress. In your situation, I guess you'd have to put a top on.

I think its because of some spectacular trailer accidents with animals strewn all over highways.

That makes me feel a little better about it. I jumped to the conclusion that there was some trumped up animal welfare aspect to it. As if animals aren't out it the open all day anyway. Blood and guts on the highway being a safety hazard is a little more practical, but still overkill to mandate a covered trailer for animals.

I don't have either trailer, that's why I was looking onto this before purchasing something. I'd like a 20 foot flatbed, and then could fabricate the "cage" for the animals.

I've got a line on a used stock trailer. If it's decent, then I'll probably just get it. I don't need the flatbed trailer, I just want one. I do need the stock trailer.

Thanks.

We picked up one of these: Live Stock Rack For pickup on CL last year to be able to haul our goats, calves or llamas. It can go in the truck or (with some ratchet straps, 3 pieces of plywood and a few 2x4s) it can go on our trailer.

If you are only hauling smaller animals, I would look into going that route.
If you are hauling cattle, horses or other large animals, I would go with a dedicated trailer.

You can still haul a lot of stuff in a stock trailer. I forget what tractor you have, but a lot of these CUT's will fit in a stock trailer with the ROPS down.

I have been thinking of doing just what the OP suggested. I was thinking of making something like the framework on a stock trailer with flat plate on the bottom of the feet and brackets that hang over the sides of my trailer. I have a pretty good pile of old scaffold bucks that I could use for the sides, front and door. I was thinking of a tarp for a roof. There are a lot of stock trailers around here with tarps for roofs.
You could slide it on the trailer and then fasten it with a chain binder on each corner. To me if your only going to use it a couple of times a year why have the expense of another tag, another set of tires, etc

Just build a slide in box out of the pipe you have sides front and cross bars on the top. pipe for the bottom so it will slide in out blocks so it isnt on the ground and at the correct height, bomm it down and go. I had a passenger van one time built a cage for it to haul my tools and a small gas welder plywood floor when I needed the seats I just un loaded the tools slid the box out put the seats in and was ready to bo in 45 min.

I doubt my tractor would fit in a stock trailer, but that would be interesting to look into. I'd probably have to beef up a stock trailer to take it.

I like these ideas coming in. I knew from the start it could be done, but it was a "simple" matter of looking into the financials. Shoot, I just realized that the stock unit could even be used through the winter as some sort of animal pen or storage unit.

If you've got more ideas, keep 'em coming. I appreciate it.

besides blood and guts on highway. i would imagine, folks hauling animals long distances in middle of summer on the hottest of days. and animals roasting in the trailers. or in winter with snow and ice. taking there toil on the animals. most livestock trailers i see, normally have some sort of wind breaker across the front of the trailer. so wind is not whipping the animals.

there is also notation most livestock trailers i see, have some sort of board around bottom perhaps not board but sheet metal or like. so when animal pees, or poops. the waste is not dropping out of trailer and onto the road way as you go down the road.

doing 65 mph and coming up on a pile of large poo can be rather dangerous.

i would say, just get a used livestock hauler. some have internal gates. to keep animals from all getting on same side of trailer and causing you to fish tail. or internal gates to keep the animals in front side of trailer. so you maintain your tongue weight. many that i have seen, normally have enough room on sides. to toss a couple panel gates on sides. and use some wire to fasten them. so when you load/unload. you have a way to backup trailer partially to a gate. and then use panels to fill in voids. so animals do not end up running loose on you.
