Suddenly, winter ends up here at the 45th parallel. It's amazing how fast the snow disappears, bright sunshine and 60 degrees prompts the urge to begin again. New year.

The chickens are out, enjoying picking through the little garden. I'll roto-till that later.

I coughed up a couple huge chunks of ground ice, but overall, mostly the ground was soft and very workable. With an inch of rain promised for tomorrow and a 70 degree day promised as well, I can finally say it. Spring has come. Even after doing this for well over 5 decades, I am still geeked.

My tractor is in its garage thing and will stay there until mid May - until the frost is out and the ground is dried. I still have snow on my lawn, which I think is the last place in the county to still have snow.

The temptation is there to take it out, but my past experiences are that if I take it out too early I make more of a mess out of the ground than it is worth. I have a knack for finding those frost pockets where everything looks fine then all of sudden the tractor is axle deep in mud and sinking.

Tilled my new garden area last fall, mainly just to try out the new Bush Hog tiller.

Tilled again a couple weeks ago after it warmed up enough.

Planted Parsnips, Red Onions, Seed onions, and Romaine Lettuce today.

Tiller worked fantastic.

BP, I like the way you can drop that deer fencing. Before my Kubota, I set 6 inch corner posts and 6 ft steel posts with heavy field fencing, 2 ft of chicken wire at the bottom (for rabbits/squirrels) then added the 7 ft deer netting with zip ties & 1/2 inch pvc water pipe. But now I'd like to expand the garden since the Kubota and plow can really get after it. What a chore to redo the whole thing.:(

I am way up North on the Canadian border, but I found a little corner of a field that was thawed out and dry enough last Sunday to test out a disc, that I just repaired, on some corn stubble. A few of the cleaners were damaged and it was frequently plugging up on me last year. Now repaired, it worked wonderfull, even in the soggy ground. I cant wait until everything thaws out and dries so that I can really let it rip.
