Sounds like blowby to me. All engines will have a little blow by, that is just part of it, but when an engine gets well used, the blow by gets worse especially when you put a load on it. I don't think you have any issues other than a tired engine. Should be a good core to rebuild and continue on, or just keep putting oil in it.
Blow by happens when the piston fires and the explosion sends air and fuel past the rings into the crankcase. The tube you are looking at is a crankcase vent. All engines have them. Some are vented back into the intake and reburned and some are not. You have to vent that pressure out or bad things happen.
When the engine gets worn, you get more blow by and therefore more smoke.
Sounds like that is what is happening. Also, moisture in the crankcase is vented through this tube, so it is possible to have milky looking oil in there.

I think I will try a heavier weight oil in it, keep an eye on the fluids and keep my fingers and toes crossed I can get one more season out of it. I am only a small scale produce farmer so once I get my 5 acres fitted the work load on the tractor goes down. Thanks for all the help out there. I am new to the site and think it is great. Have you checked the thermostat. A gas engine running cold will give you lots of vapor and the crud in the breather too.

I have a JD400 and I notice exhaust coming out of this tube on the side of the engine. Someone mentioned it was a crankcase vent, but didn't say if it was normal.
It's just regular exhaust fumes on an old engine, so based on reading this thread I take it to be "blow by". It happens even when idling.
