I have a MS391 that I just bought this winter, I am cutting a lot of hardwood and the bar gets very hot quickly. My Echo CS 530 doesnt seem to have this problem. The chain is brand new, checked to make sure the oil is coming off the end of the bar which it is. Bar is just about smoking after 6 or 7 cuts of hardwood 10- 15" in dia. Your thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Rob

Is it the right chain?:)

Has the bar been tuned up?:)

How fast are you cutting?:)

Is the chain sharp?

Put on some gloves and with the engine shut off pull the chain around on the bar. It should move free with a light pull. If the chain pulls hard the tensioner is probably set up too tight.

Edge filed flat and straight with no burrs. Groove cleaned out.:)

Thanks will look at this in the morning

Turns freely Thanks

I don't know if that saw has an adjustable oiler, if so you could crank it up.

If you have oil coming off the end then your oiler is working. It sounds like your chain is tensioned way too tight. There should be a little slack when you pull down on the chain on the bottom of the bar.
As others have said the chain should pull around the bar without too much effort. Also make sure the side cover is on correctly if it is on crooked it could be causing a problem.
After that I would take the chain off and check the nose sprocket to see if it is turning. The biggest problem I see is folks not cleaning out the oil hole on the bar. Then they don't clean out the chain groove. After that if the chain has burrs on the drive links from improper installation. The burrs rub inside the bar grove and heat it up.

Are you using a low kickback (safety) chain? If yes it will cut slow and run hot. Replace with a semi-chisel chain.
