Hey just wanted to put in my 2 cents here... I would def. start by cleaning all battery connections and ground wire at frame connection. I think its over the right front tire... Next take the battery to auto store and have it tested, Im betting its shot! I have seen these batteries do some weird things especially on newer "20" series tractors that rely on specific voltages..
The reason your tractor quit when you turned PTO switch on is your actually engaging an electric solenoid to allow hydraulic flow to your PTO clutch.. The extra amperage required to run this probably reduced what juice you have left in battery (thanks to alternator) to the point where the fuel shutoff solenoid (also required specific voltage to operate) clicked out and shut off fuel to engine.
Bottom line is your most likely looking at new battery.. As mentioned above the JD batteries are not the greatest.. Good Luck!!
